Raducanu’s Qatar Campaign Cut Short Amidst Health Concerns
Emma Raducanu’s return to the court in Doha for the Qatar Open was abruptly halted as she was forced to retire during her first-round match against Camila Osorio on Monday. The British star, who had just reached her first WTA final since her sensational 2021 US Open triumph over the weekend, saw her promising run come to a premature end after requiring medical attention on court.
The incident occurred in the third set of her match against the Colombian Osorio. After a hard-fought second set that saw her opponent level the match at one set all, Raducanu appeared to struggle. She dropped serve early in the decisive third set, and it was at this point that a doctor was called to assess her condition, checking her blood pressure.

While Raducanu briefly returned to the court for one more game, it was evident she was not at her best, moving gingerly. Ultimately, she made her way to the net to concede the match to Osorio. The score stood at 2-6, 6-4, 0-2 in favour of Osorio at the time of Raducanu’s retirement.
This unfortunate turn of events comes just 48 hours after Raducanu’s impressive performance at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca. The 23-year-old had battled her way to the final, her first since her maiden Grand Slam victory. However, the final itself proved to be a challenging affair. Raducanu was defeated in straight sets by Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, with the scoreline reading 6-0, 6-2. Health and fitness issues were reported to have plagued her during that match, necessitating a medical timeout.
A Rollercoaster Week in Transylvania
Despite the disappointing end to her Qatar campaign, Raducanu’s performance in Cluj-Napoca offered glimmers of the resilience and fighting spirit that captured the world’s attention in 2021. The week in Romania, her father Ion’s homeland, saw her display remarkable tenacity.
Key moments from her Transylvania Open run included:
- A Comeback Against Kaja Juvan: In the second round, Raducanu found herself in a precarious position, trailing 5-0 in the first set. However, she rallied impressively, showcasing a “never-say-die” attitude to eventually win the match.
- Overcoming a Set Deficit: In the semi-finals, she faced Oleksandra Oliynykova. This encounter was described as a “brutal” battle where Raducanu had to come from a set down to secure her place in the final. This gruelling match also resulted in her sustaining a shoulder injury.

The journey to the Transylvania Open final was particularly significant for Raducanu, given her somewhat turbulent start to the season. She had exited the Australian Open in January in the first round, suffering a straight-sets defeat to world No. 55 Anastasia Potapova. This early exit led to a coaching change, with Raducanu parting ways with Francisco Roig after only six months, marking her tenth coaching change in a relatively short career.
Looking Ahead: Dubai and Beyond
The Qatar Open is part of a significant double-header of WTA 1000 events in the Middle East, with a second tournament commencing in Dubai next week. It remains uncertain whether Raducanu will be fit to compete in the Dubai event, given her recent health setbacks.
Following her final defeat in Cluj-Napoca, Raducanu expressed her gratitude to the tournament organisers, ball kids, umpires, sponsors, and the public, who she said made her feel “at home.”
She stated: “Sorry today I couldn’t bring my best. But congratulations as well to Sorana – you’ve had an incredible week. I think you’re playing great tennis. I don’t know if this is your last tournament in Cluj here, but I know if it was me I’d be out on a high. Congrats for everything.”

Reflecting on reaching her first final in years, she added: “Honestly it’s been a while since I’ve given one of these speeches. I wanna thank Alexis and the people back home who’ve supported me throughout the last few years. It’s been like four or five years since my last final. It means a lot. I’m really happy it’s here in Cluj.”
Raducanu’s career continues to be a compelling narrative of immense potential punctuated by periods of struggle and resilience. Her ability to battle through adversity, as seen in Romania, is a testament to her character, and fans will be eagerly awaiting her return to full fitness.
