Young English Talent Set for Barcelona Switch
A promising young winger from Norwich City, 16-year-old Ajay Tavares, is on the verge of finalising a significant move to Spanish giants Barcelona. The talented teenager jetted off to Barcelona over the weekend and successfully completed his medical examinations on Monday, paving the way for his transfer to the Catalan club.
Reports from January indicated that Barcelona were nearing an agreement for Tavares, even as Norwich City worked to retain his services. Interest from other European clubs, including RB Leipzig, was also present, highlighting the player’s burgeoning reputation.

Tavares has already represented England at various youth levels, earning caps for the U15, U16, and U17 squads. Crucially, he also possesses a Portuguese passport. This EU documentation has been instrumental in facilitating his transfer to Barcelona, bypassing the usual regulations that restrict British nationals from moving to Spanish clubs until they reach the age of 18.
Upon arrival at the prestigious La Masia academy, Tavares is expected to initially join the Juvenil A squad. This team is managed by Pol Planas, providing a structured environment for his development. His trajectory within the club will then see him progress to Barcelona Atletic, the reserve team that competes in the fourth tier of Spanish football.
Tavares’s senior debut came last summer when he featured in a pre-season friendly for Norwich City’s first team, offering a glimpse of his potential on a larger stage.
La Masia Continues to Attract Top Youth Talent
Tavares is not the first promising English youth international to make the switch to Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy in recent times. He follows in the footsteps of Louie Barry, formerly of Aston Villa, who is currently on loan at Stockport County.
Another notable young player at Barcelona’s academy with a connection to England is William Ferdinand. Born in Australia, Ferdinand has also been recognised by England, receiving a call-up to their U15 squad in December. This trend underscores Barcelona’s continued commitment to scouting and nurturing top young talent from across the globe. The allure of La Masia, with its rich history of developing world-class footballers, remains a powerful draw for aspiring young players. The club’s philosophy of technical development and tactical understanding offers a unique environment for these emerging stars to hone their skills and potentially follow in the footsteps of legends who have emerged from its ranks. The move for Tavares signals Barcelona’s ongoing strategy to invest in the future, securing promising players early in their careers.
