Dench: Co-star’s ‘Mischief Maker’ Revealed

Rosamund Pike Names Judi Dench “Finest Actress” and Christian Bale “Best Actor”

Rosamund Pike, the acclaimed 47-year-old actress known for her captivating performances in films like Gone Girl and the recent sensation Saltburn, has publicly lauded two titans of the acting world: Dame Judi Dench and Christian Bale. During an engaging interview with comedian Romesh Ranganathan on BBC Radio 2, Pike shared her profound admiration for both actors, offering unique insights into their professional prowess and personal demeanour.

Pike’s highest praise was reserved for Dame Judi Dench, whom she affectionately described as a “mischief maker” and the “finest actress” she has ever had the privilege of collaborating with. Their professional paths have crossed on multiple occasions, including a 2009 London production of Madame de Sade and the iconic 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day. Reflecting on these experiences, Pike highlighted Dench’s remarkable ability to be both “so delightful” and to transition seamlessly into her characters.

“The best actress I’ve ever worked with is Judi Dench, who’s such a mischief maker,” Pike stated. “She’s so delightful. She’s so, so good. If you ever just want to just hear something short, listen to Judi Dench read a Shakespeare sonnet, just find one on YouTube, and it will move you to tears – you’ll just think that is how English should be spoken.”

Pike further elaborated on the captivating duality of Dench’s presence. “She’s just amazing and yet, when you’re doing a play with her, she’s so funny, she’s so naughty. Off stage, she’s completely out of character, laughing, playing a practical joke, and then she walks on and it’s all there.” This ability to embody a character with such intensity while maintaining a playful spirit off-stage paints a vivid picture of Dench’s extraordinary talent and enduring charisma.

Christian Bale: A Master of Method Acting

Shifting her focus to the male acting arena, Pike identified Christian Bale, the star of American Psycho, as the finest actor she has collaborated with. Pike and Bale shared the screen in the 2017 Western film Hostiles. However, Pike admitted that her personal connection with Bale is somewhat limited, largely due to his well-documented and intense method acting approach.

“He’s another level,” she remarked. “I can’t say I know him really, but it was just a pretty amazing experience to be around him in a film called Hostiles, but I don’t think I met Christian, I think I only met the character. He’s quite method. He’s very method.”

Pike went on to elaborate on Bale’s profound dedication to his craft, emphasising the sheer depth of his commitment. “It’s just the level of truth, the level of commitment, integrity, truth. It’s the sort of depth of it all the time. I think he just doesn’t give anything away. I think he’s not someone who’s fallen victim to the thing of needing to be liked. I don’t think he’s at all interested in his own image in the press or anything. I think he just does the work and has been able to do it since he was very young. I think he shuts out all the noise really well and creates the space he needs. His performances are just astounding.” Her description suggests a performer who is entirely consumed by his roles, creating an almost impenetrable barrier between his personal life and his on-screen persona.

Contrasting Acting Philosophies

In stark contrast to Bale’s immersive method, Pike revealed her own more flexible approach to acting. “I’ve seen both ways of total excellence, and I think I can go quite up to the last minute being silly and then switch on,” she explained. This suggests a confidence in her ability to access and embody a character’s essence when the moment calls for it, without necessarily maintaining that persona off-set.

Beyond her celebrated roles in Gone Girl, the 2005 period drama Pride and Prejudice, and the recent critically acclaimed Saltburn, Rosamund Pike is preparing for her next stage venture. She is set to appear in the West End production of Inter Alia, which will run from 19 March until 20 June at Wyndham’s Theatre. This upcoming play offers audiences another opportunity to witness Pike’s versatile talent on a different stage.
