Molly Meldrum’s Alarming Health Battle: 24/7 Care Revealed

Molly Meldrum: A Quiet Chapter for Australia’s Music Icon Amidst Health Concerns

Australia’s beloved music guru, Ian “Molly” Meldrum, has largely retreated from the public eye over the past year, with close sources indicating the veteran figure is facing significant health challenges. Now 83, Meldrum has reportedly entered a new phase of his life, receiving dedicated “around-the-clock” care within the comfort of his own home, surrounded by his closest friends and family.

While his public appearances have become rare, those in his inner circle maintain that Meldrum’s spirit remains undimmed. A friend shared with the Herald Sun that he is “cared for around the clock, supported, safe, and deeply loved.” This sentiment is echoed by observations that his “famous wicked sense of humour hasn’t dulled one bit,” and that even in his current circumstances, he remains “unmistakably, wonderfully Molly.” The friend added, “Since stepping back from public life, he’s somehow become even more delightfully chaotic. There’s always a story, always a laugh, always that spark.”

Meldrum’s decision to withdraw from public life became particularly noticeable when he was unable to attend a September 2024 event celebrating the 50th anniversary of Countdown, the iconic ABC music show that propelled him to stardom. Meldrum, the charismatic host of the program, was expected to be present for the launch of a commemorative coin marking the milestone. Instead, he issued a statement expressing his fond memories of the show and its significant impact on the Australian music industry.

The Lingering Shadow of a Past Accident

Former Countdown announcer Gavin Wood has spoken candidly about the ongoing health struggles Meldrum has faced since a severe fall from a ladder in December 2011. This incident resulted in an acquired brain injury and nearly cost him his life. Wood described the fall as a “horrible thing to have happened,” suggesting it has been the root cause of many of Meldrum’s subsequent health issues.

Despite these challenges, Wood believes Meldrum is embracing a quieter lifestyle. “He has been a public figure all his life and I think he is just enjoying a quieter life,” Wood commented. “He is still Molly, still interested in music and still has it turned up to 11. He is still naughty, he has still got that spark that we love, but I think he is enjoying life being a normal person.”

Public Incidents and Growing Concerns

Friends and family have expressed concern for Meldrum’s well-being over the years, particularly following a series of public incidents that garnered significant media attention. Approximately 18 months prior to this report, Meldrum was involved in a widely publicised incident at a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne, where he reportedly exposed himself and appeared to urinate on the floor.

Australian musician Russell Morris, who was once managed by Meldrum, described the situation as a “train wreck.” Speaking to 2GB, Morris offered a perspective on Meldrum’s behaviour: “He’s doing OK. He’s not young anymore… He wants to live his life, that’s the problem, he doesn’t want someone to put him in a home or something, so he just decides to go out… He just does what he wants to do. And consequently, it’s a train wreck sometimes.”

Further headlines emerged in January 2023 when Meldrum appeared to moon the crowd at Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. He later apologised, attributing the act to a wardrobe malfunction. Footage also surfaced of a similar incident at the 2022 ChillOut Festival in Daylesford, Victoria. These events led to public calls for him to step back, with actor Samuel Johnson stating on 4BC’s Afternoons with Sofie Formica, “I’m sick of him doing this, I’m sick of it. He needs to hang up his hat. Now.”

A Different Perspective: Wit and Cognition Remain

However, those closest to Meldrum insist that the public perception often fails to capture the full picture. The reclusive music icon has recently been a subject of renewed conversation with the release of Four Weddings And An Encore, a new memoir by music industry executive Amanda Pelman. Pelman shared a unique perspective, having lived with Meldrum as a housemate and worked alongside him at their record label, Melodian.

Pelman recounted her time living with Meldrum, describing their relationship with affectionate nicknames and a home life that was a “never-ending party.” She recalled hosting international superstars like Stevie Nicks and Bob Dylan.

Crucially, Pelman asserts that despite his health challenges, Meldrum remains mentally sharp. “He is cognisant,” she stated. “He has the acquired brain injury from the fall, but Molly still has his sharp wit.” Pelman reflected on his extraordinary life, calling it “amazing.”

While Molly Meldrum may be absent from the public stage, those who know him best are adamant that the distinctive spark that defined his career and endeared him to generations of Australians has not been extinguished. The care and love surrounding him suggest a focus on his well-being, allowing him to navigate this later chapter of his life with dignity and the enduring warmth of his personality.
