Radcliffe: Hollywood’s Wildest Oz Remake Pitch for Potter Trio

Daniel Radcliffe Recalls Bizarre ‘Wizard of Oz’ Reboot Pitch

As the wizarding world prepares for a significant new chapter with the upcoming HBO reboot of Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe, the original Daniel Radcliffe, has been reflecting on his formative years spent within J.K. Rowling’s magical universe. Even after leaving the halls of Hogwarts behind, it seems the echoes of magic have continued to resonate in his career.

In a recent candid conversation, Radcliffe revisited a particularly memorable, and some might say outlandish, moment from his time as the boy wizard. He shared what he considers to be one of the most peculiar film concepts ever presented to him, a project he ultimately turned down.

The Karate-Kicking Cowardly Lion

During an appearance on the popular web series First We Feast’s Hot Ones, hosted by Sean Evans, the 36-year-old actor was prompted to discuss the strangest project he’d ever committed to. Radcliffe, however, cleverly pivoted the question, opting instead to recount a proposal he rejected outright.

The idea was for a remake of the classic film The Wizard of Oz, with Radcliffe, alongside his Harry Potter co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, slated to star. This was at the peak of their global fame from the wizarding franchise.

According to Radcliffe, the pitch involved Emma Watson taking on the iconic role of Dorothy. While he couldn’t recall the specific part envisioned for Rupert Grint, Radcliffe vividly remembered his own proposed character: the Cowardly Lion. However, this wouldn’t be just any Cowardly Lion; this iteration was also a martial arts expert. Radcliffe recounted the pitch with a laugh, explaining he was meant to portray a “karate-kicking Cowardly Lion.” This detail sent host Sean Evans into fits of laughter.

Even as a young teenager, around 14 or 15 years old at the time, Radcliffe possessed a keen intuition that the project was destined for failure. He recalled thinking, “I don’t know much about the world, but this is a bad idea, and it should not be made.”

Looking back on the experience, he humorously described the individual pitching the idea as seeming like “the laziest, craziest person in the world.” Despite its absurdity, Radcliffe admitted that the memory still brings a smile to his face.

A New Generation Steps Onto the Platform

Radcliffe’s reflections on his Harry Potter past come at a time when a new generation of young actors is preparing to embark on their own magical journeys. HBO is currently developing a television adaptation of the beloved series, with casting decisions already made. Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton have been announced as the new Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively.

Radcliffe has maintained contact with Watson and Grint, and the trio apparently share a similar, almost surreal, sentiment as they witness a new group of actors stepping into the roles that defined their youth.

When photos of the new cast emerge, Radcliffe shared that the reaction among the original trio is often emotional. “You just see the pictures of these kids, and you just want to grab them and hug them,” he explained. “That’s the impulse that I think that we, mainly, all have.”

The new Harry Potter television series is anticipated to debut on HBO in 2026, signalling the beginning of a fresh era for witches, wizards, and the enduring magic of Hogwarts for a new audience. The prospect of a new generation experiencing the wonder of the wizarding world is a sentiment shared by many, including the actors who first brought these characters to life.
