Hollywood Icon Tom Hanks Ditches the Limousine for Sydney’s Metro
Sydney commuters experienced a rather extraordinary Monday morning when Hollywood megastar Tom Hanks was spotted navigating the city’s Metro system during the bustling peak hour. The beloved actor, currently Down Under to film a sequel to his acclaimed Apple+ World War II epic, Greyhound, opted for a decidedly low-key approach to his daily commute.
Hanks, known for his iconic roles in films like Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan, made a valiant effort to blend in with the crowd. He was seen sporting a casual grey sweater, a khaki bucket hat, and dark sunglasses, presumably hoping to avoid drawing undue attention. However, his attempt at incognito travel was thwarted by an exceptionally observant member of the public.
An eagle-eyed fan, who wished to remain anonymous but was identified as Ann G, spotted the Academy Award winner boarding the train at North Sydney station. “I knew as soon as he entered the carriage that it was him,” Ann G told North Sydney Living. “I have strong facial recognition skills, and his face moves in a very particular rubbery way.”

The starstruck fan, a self-proclaimed admirer of Hanks’ extensive filmography, didn’t hesitate to inform her daughter of her incredible sighting. “I think that tall guy over there is Tom Hanks,” she reportedly exclaimed.

Upon realising he had been recognised, Hanks responded with a warm smile. The mother and daughter then approached him, and Ann G seized the opportunity. “I approached him, and I just said, ‘Please tell me you ARE Tom Hanks!’” she recounted.
The affable actor, with a playful grin, put a finger to his lips, indicating his desire to avoid causing a commotion. “I don’t want to be recognised and cause a scene,” he reportedly said. Undeterred, Ann G politely inquired, “So I whispered, ‘Can I please have a photo with you?’” Hanks, ever the gentleman, agreed. “We need to get out at the next stop, let’s do this!” he exclaimed.
True to his word, Hanks disembarked the train at Barangaroo Station, accompanied by a few companions. This unexpected encounter on public transport occurred just hours after the A-lister had already surprised staff at a local cricket store.
A Sporting Detour: Tom Hanks and Son Visit The Greg Chappell Cricket Centre
In a delightful turn of events, the sighting on the Metro followed a visit to The Greg Chappell Cricket Centre in North Sydney. Hanks wasn’t alone; he was joined by his son, Truman Hanks, 30, whom he shares with his wife, actress Rita Wilson.

The store manager, John Doughty, admitted he didn’t immediately recognise the Hollywood A-lister. Doughty described Hanks’ appearance as “laid-back” and almost “messy,” which contributed to his initial lack of recognition. “I didn’t actually recognise him to start off with,” Doughty told the Daily Telegraph.
Hanks and his son spent a considerable amount of time browsing the store, eventually being the last two customers to leave. Their shopping spree included a beach cricket set, several caps, wicketkeeping gloves, cricket balls, and shorts. Doughty described Hanks as a “really nice guy” and a “typical American,” noting his animated and boisterous demeanour during their visit.

Greyhound Sequel Takes Shape in Australia
The reason behind Tom Hanks’ extended stay in Australia is the filming of a sequel to his highly successful 2022 Apple+ streaming film, Greyhound. The original film, which Hanks also scripted, was a gripping drama set aboard a US Navy destroyer engaged in battle against enemy forces in the treacherous North Atlantic during World War II.
The upcoming sequel is expected to continue the narrative, with Hanks reprising his role as Commander Ernst ‘Ernie’ Krause. This new instalment will see his character heading to the Pacific theatre to continue the fight in the war. The production’s presence in Australia has brought a significant Hollywood presence to the country, with Hanks himself embracing local experiences, much to the delight of Sydney residents.
