Dramatic Two-Day Rescue Mission Saves Cockapoo from 500ft Cliff
A daring two-day rescue operation, involving over 40 dedicated individuals, has successfully reunited a terrified cockapoo named Luna with her overjoyed owners after she plunged off a staggering 500-foot cliff along Dorset’s picturesque Jurassic Coast. The dramatic ordeal unfolded on the treacherous cliff face near Thorncombe Beacon, a location famed for its breathtaking views but also its inherent dangers.
Luna, a beloved pet, found herself in a perilous situation after falling from the cliff edge between Eype and Seatown. Miraculously, her fall was broken by a ledge approximately 160 feet below the cliff top, preventing a much more tragic outcome. However, this partial descent presented its own unique set of challenges for the rescue teams.
The initial rescue attempt on Thursday evening was hampered by the dog’s frightened state. Luna, disoriented and scared, repeatedly evaded her rescuers, darting along the narrow ledge. As darkness descended and the weather conditions began to deteriorate, the coastguard teams were forced to make the difficult decision to abandon the operation for the night, with the hope of returning in daylight.
A Coordinated Pincer Movement Secures a Safe Recovery
The following morning, a renewed and more extensive effort was launched. Three coastguard teams from Beer, West Bay, and Lyme Regis returned to the scene, bolstered by the crucial support of two fire crews. The primary objective was to execute a carefully planned rescue that would ensure Luna’s safety and retrieve her from her precarious perch.
A rescuer was initially lowered by rope towards Luna’s position. However, her continued evasive movements along the ledge made direct capture impossible. This prompted the rescue coordination team to devise a more strategic approach. Incident commanders from West Bay Coastguard, Bridport Fire Station, and the technical rescue lead collaborated to formulate a robust and safe rescue plan.
This plan involved deploying two rope rescue teams on either side of Luna’s location. The objective was to create a “coordinated pincer movement,” effectively encircling the dog and limiting her escape routes along the ledge. This intricate manoeuvre required exceptional skill and teamwork from all involved.
Persistence Pays Off: Luna is Safely Reunited
The persistence and expertise of a coastguard rope technician ultimately proved to be the key to Luna’s successful recovery. After a period of careful coaxing and strategic positioning, the technician managed to tempt the frightened cockapoo into a specially designed animal rescue bag. Once secured, Luna was safely winched back up to the clifftop.
The relief on the faces of Luna’s owners was palpable as their beloved pet was handed back, thankfully unharmed. While no obvious injuries were reported, the ordeal was undoubtedly a harrowing experience for the dog and her family.
A spokesperson for Beer Coastguard highlighted the significant resources and effort involved. “This rescue took over 11 hours in total with over 40 people involved over the two days,” they stated. The spokesperson also issued a crucial reminder to pet owners: “Please keep your dogs on a lead when near the cliff edge.” This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise when pets are not adequately supervised in such environments.
The successful operation was lauded as an “excellent example of multi-agency collaboration,” with the coastguard and fire and rescue services working seamlessly together to achieve a positive outcome. The coordinated efforts, meticulous planning, and unwavering dedication of all involved ensured that Luna’s terrifying ordeal had a happy ending.
