Gyllenhaal Dynasty: Maggie on the Late Late Show

Hollywood Royalty and a Deep Family Tree: The Gyllenhaals

Hollywood A-lister Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to grace our screens on Friday night’s The Late Late Show. The acclaimed actress will be joining host Patrick Kielty to discuss her latest directorial venture, an adaptation of Frankenstein titled The Bride!. She won’t be alone, however, as she’ll be sharing the spotlight with the incredibly talented Jessie Buckley, who is also rumoured to be an Oscar contender this year.

While many fans immediately link Maggie to her equally famous younger brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, the Gyllenhaal family’s story stretches back much further, revealing a fascinating lineage that includes Swedish nobility. This surprising revelation adds another layer to the already impressive Gyllenhaal dynasty.

A Noble Past: Tracing the Gyllenhaal Ancestry

Delving into the complete ancestral history of the Gyllenhaals is no small feat, but the known background is both remarkable and, frankly, a little unexpected. The family’s roots can be traced back to Swedish nobility. The Gyllenhaal name originates from Lieutenant Nils Gunnarson Haal, a cavalry officer who was ennobled in 1652, nearly 400 years ago. It was at this point his surname was changed to Gyllenhaal.

Nils’s younger brother, Hans Gyllenhaal, tragically died in action during the Battle of Helsingborg. Centuries later, a descendant of Hans, Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal, made a significant journey, emigrating to the United States in 1865. Anders became the editor of the Swedish-American newspaper Svenska Amerikanaren Tribunen in Chicago, and it is through him that Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal trace their American lineage.

The Pillars of the Modern Gyllenhaal Family

Stephen Gyllenhaal: Director and Poet

The great-grandson of Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal, Stephen Gyllenhaal, is a respected figure in the film industry. A renowned film director and poet, his directorial credits include the film Paris Trout and an episode of the celebrated mystery series Twin Peaks. His work on the 1990 television film A Killing in a Small Town earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Director for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special. He also had the unique experience of directing his then 13-year-old son, Jake, in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street.

Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal: Screenwriter and Director

Stephen married Naomi Foner in 1977, who is herself an accomplished screenwriter and director. Naomi’s writing talents were recognised with an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and a Golden Globe win for her work on Running on Empty. She made her directorial debut in 2013 with the film Very Good Girls, which starred Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen. Stephen and Naomi had two children together, Maggie and Jake, before their divorce in 2009.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: From Actor to Acclaimed Director

Maggie Gyllenhaal, the elder of the two Gyllenhaal siblings, began her acting career with smaller roles as a teenager. Her breakthrough performance came in the 2002 black comedy Secretary, a role that cemented her status as a formidable talent. She later portrayed Rachel Dawes in the blockbuster The Dark Knight, before shifting her focus towards independent cinema in the 2010s.

In 2021, Maggie made a successful transition to directing with her debut feature, The Lost Daughter. The film, which featured Paul Mescal’s feature film debut, garnered significant critical acclaim and earned Maggie nominations for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.

Her next major project is the highly anticipated adaptation of Frankenstein, specifically focusing on the character of the Bride. This new film, distinct from the original novel and the classic 1930s movie, will star Jessie Buckley as the titular Bride of Frankenstein’s monster, with Christian Bale portraying the Monster himself. Adding to the family affair, Jake Gyllenhaal is also set to appear in the film, as is Maggie’s husband, Peter Sarsgaard.

During her appearance on The Late Late Show, Maggie is expected to delve into her experience directing The Bride! and the dynamics of working alongside her brother Jake.

Jake Gyllenhaal: A Decades-Long Hollywood Presence

Arguably the most widely recognised Gyllenhaal in the public eye, Jake has been a consistent presence in Hollywood for the past thirty years. His breakout role in the cult classic Donnie Darko launched him into stardom. He garnered significant critical praise for his portrayal of Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain, a role that saw him share the screen with the late Heath Ledger.

Jake’s impressive filmography includes critically acclaimed performances in the mystery-thriller Zodiac, the gritty 2011 action thriller End of Watch, and the stylish 2016 thriller Nocturnal Animals. Beyond his film work, he has also graced the stage with notable appearances in Broadway and West End productions. His latest venture sees him reuniting with his sister, Maggie, for her directorial debut in The Bride!.

The Late Late Show Appearance: A Glimpse Behind the Scenes

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jessie Buckley’s appearance on The Late Late Show promises to be an engaging conversation. Host Patrick Kielty will likely explore Maggie’s directorial journey with The Bride! and her unique experience of collaborating with her brother Jake on the project. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley is expected to share insights into her own awards season journey and represent her home county of Kerry as the Oscars approach. The interview, pre-recorded, will offer viewers a behind-the-scenes look at these talented individuals and their current professional endeavours.
