Mooney Joins Elite Australian Batting Club as Series Heats Up
In a significant milestone for Australian women’s cricket, Beth Mooney has become the fourth Australian batter to surpass 7000 international runs. This achievement, however, is just another chapter in the stellar career of the 32-year-old left-hander, who shows no signs of slowing down. Her latest innings, a commanding 76 off 79 deliveries, not only secured her player of the match honours but also played a pivotal role in Australia’s six-wicket victory over India in the recent ODI clash at Allan Border Field.
This crucial win has levelled the multi-format series at two wins apiece, setting the stage for an enthralling conclusion. With two more ODIs scheduled for Hobart and a Test match in Perth to come, the competition is far from over.
Mooney’s remarkable innings saw her join an illustrious group of Australian cricketing greats: Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, and Alyssa Healy. She reached the coveted 7000-run mark when she had scored just six runs, a testament to her consistent performance and longevity at the international level.
“I didn’t know that came up tonight but certainly when I first started playing with this team I didn’t think I’d be on too many lists alongside those three players,” Mooney reflected after the match. “It is probably a testament to being around for a long time but also the opportunities that have been presented to me. I am very grateful and lucky that the coaching staff I’ve had throughout my career, and the selectors I’ve had, have shown a lot of faith and trust in me. Hopefully, that is not the end and I have plenty more in me.”
Mooney’s batting prowess is a significant asset to the Australian team, showcasing an impressive versatility. She possesses the ability to dig in and build an innings by expertly finding the gaps, a crucial skill in any format of the game. Equally, when the situation demands an acceleration of the scoring rate, Mooney can readily adapt. This was evident in her recent innings where she effortlessly dispatched two immaculate sixes down the ground against India, propelling her strike rate from a steady 70 to nearly 100 in a flash.
A Partnership Built on Experience and Trust
Her effortless display was further highlighted by a vital 64-run partnership with her captain, Alyssa Healy. Healy, who is set to retire at the end of this international series after a distinguished career, contributed a valuable 50 off 70 balls. The camaraderie and understanding between these two experienced players were palpable on the field.
“It has been a real privilege to play alongside Midge (Healy) and obviously spend a fair bit of time out in the middle with her,” Mooney shared. “We have had some pretty amazing partnerships along the way. Tonight’s was much-needed after back-to-back wickets. To see the way she adapts and changes her style of play based on the conditions and the situation in front of her has been class throughout her career. To share a partnership with her was cool, and hopefully, we’ve got a few more in us by the end of the series.”

Looking Ahead: The Road to the Test Match
With the target chased down with more than 11 overs to spare, Mooney expressed optimism about the team’s batting potential. “That’s where we want to be as a batting group, where we are adapting to conditions but also taking the game on where we can,” she stated. The team is now focused on the upcoming matches in Hobart, anticipating different conditions that will test their adaptability.
“The conditions in Hobart will be different, so it will be nice to get down there and have a couple of ODIs on a pretty good batting wicket,” Mooney added. “To level out the series has been really good for us, and hopefully, we can win the next two as well leading into the Test.”
The bowlers also deserve commendation for their efforts in restricting India to a total of 214. A notable mention goes to Megan Schutt, who was a late inclusion to the squad following a quad injury to fellow fast bowler Kim Garth. Schutt, who did not feature in the recent T20 series, which India won 2-1, made an immediate impact, taking a wicket in the opening over of the match. Her swift arrival and immediate contribution underscore the depth and resilience of the Australian bowling attack as they prepare for the remainder of the series and the crucial Test match.
