Real Madrid boss: UEFA must seize chance to fight racism

Real Madrid Coach Urges UEFA to Take Strong Stance Against Racism After Vinicius Jr. Allegations

The football world is once again grappling with the persistent issue of racism, this time in the wake of alleged abuse directed at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. during a recent Champions League fixture. The incident, which occurred during the knockout phase play-off first leg in Lisbon, has prompted a strong call from Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa for UEFA to demonstrate a genuine commitment to eradicating racism from the sport.

The alleged abuse surfaced shortly after Vinicius Jr. scored the opening goal of the match against Benfica. The Brazilian international claimed he was subjected to racist slurs by Benfica’s young Argentinian winger, Gianluca Prestianni. Prestianni has vehemently denied the allegations.

In response to the incident, UEFA has issued a one-game provisional ban to Prestianni, ruling him out of the return leg in Madrid. However, Arbeloa believes this is a critical moment for the governing body to go beyond symbolic gestures.

“We are facing a great opportunity to make a significant step forward in the fight against racism,” Arbeloa stated during a press conference. “UEFA has always been a strong advocate in the fight against racism, and now they have the opportunity not to leave it as just a slogan or a nice banner before matches. I hope they seize this opportunity.”

The controversy surrounding the match has also highlighted differing perspectives on player conduct and its potential to incite crowd reactions. Vinicius Jr., 25, received a yellow card for his goal celebration, which saw him approach Benfica supporters. Benfica boss Jose Mourinho later suggested that the Brazil international’s actions were disrespectful and provocative.

However, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has strongly defended his teammate, asserting that Vinicius Jr.’s celebration does not serve as justification for any form of racist behaviour.

“Mourinho is Mourinho and, as a coach, you defend your club and what your player has told you,” Courtois remarked. “What disappoints me is using Vini’s celebration. He didn’t do anything wrong. He celebrated as many opponents have done against us because when they score against us, the euphoria is double or triple. It’s happened, and we need to move on. We cannot justify an alleged act of racism with a celebration.”

Arbeloa lauded Vinicius Jr.’s resilience and character, describing him as a “fighter” and expressing his certainty that the forward would perform exceptionally in the upcoming match at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Vini Junior has always shown great courage and character,” Arbeloa added. “Anyone in his situation, I don’t know how they would react. He has always done so bravely, showing tremendous personality. That has always been his response, and it always will be because he is a fighter. Tomorrow he will come out to fight and play a great match, showing that he is one of the best players on the planet.”

The initial match was temporarily halted for approximately 10 minutes after Vinicius Jr. brought the alleged abuse to the attention of referee Francois Letexier. This led to his teammates briefly leaving the pitch in solidarity.

Reports also emerged of other discriminatory gestures from the stands at the Estadio da Luz. UEFA has confirmed that an ethics and disciplinary inspector will conduct a thorough investigation, which could lead to further sanctions for Prestianni.

Conversely, Benfica president Rui Costa has offered a staunch defence of Prestianni, insisting that the 20-year-old winger is “anything but racist.” The club has also formally appealed against the provisional ban imposed on the player.

“I’m not on the pitch to know what was said or not said but as you can imagine, in a situation like that, a lot is said,” Costa told reporters. “But we believe in our player’s word, because more than that, we know the players we have at home. Prestianni is being crucified as a racist person, and I can guarantee that he is anything but racist, and that is why we have such confidence in him as a player.”

Costa further emphasised the club’s stance by stating: “We have filed an appeal because we believe that nothing has been proven and therefore, there is no justification for the player’s absence from this game.”

Jose Mourinho, who has faced scrutiny for his earlier comments on the matter, will not be participating in the customary pre-match press conference. The ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for robust action and clear messaging from football authorities to ensure that stadiums are safe and inclusive environments for all players and fans.
