Rivian Revamps R1 EVs with Smarter Features and Enhanced Performance
Rivian is rolling out a significant software update, version 2026.03, for its R1S and R1T electric vehicles, bringing a host of improvements that benefit both new and existing owners. This latest update focuses on enhancing performance, convenience, and cold-weather usability, demonstrating Rivian’s commitment to continuous improvement for its flagship models.
The Convenience of Your Wrist: A New Apple Watch App
One of the most notable additions is a dedicated Apple Watch app, offering a new level of convenience for R1 owners, particularly those with first-generation (Gen 1) vehicles. This app allows drivers to leave their physical car key and even their smartphone behind when they need to access or drive their Rivian.
- Digital Key Functionality for Gen 1: While second-generation (Gen 2) Rivians boast full digital key support with automatic locking and unlocking based on proximity, Gen 1 owners previously lacked this feature. The new Apple Watch app bridges this gap. By simply tapping on their smartwatch screen, Gen 1 R1S and R1T owners can now lock and unlock their vehicles.
- Keyless Driving: With the Apple Watch app open and the smartwatch connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth, drivers can initiate driving without needing a car key or an iPhone. This is a significant step towards truly keyless operation for a broader range of Rivian owners.
Performance Boosts: Sport Mode and Launch Mode Expansion
Rivian is also expanding the availability of its performance-oriented driving modes, making them accessible to more R1 models.
- Sport Mode for All: Previously exclusive to Performance Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor variants, Sport Mode is now being extended to base Dual-Motor models. This includes both Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles, across both NMC and LFP battery configurations. Engaging Sport Mode optimises power delivery for quicker acceleration compared to the standard driving mode.
- Adjustable Ride Height with Sport Mode: A welcome addition for all compatible Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles is the ability to adjust the ride height to “Standard” when Sport Mode is activated. Previously, the vehicle would automatically lower its suspension in Sport Mode, but this update offers more flexibility.
- Launch Mode Goes Wider: Launch Mode, designed to prepare the vehicle for rapid acceleration from a standstill, is also seeing expanded availability. Until now, this feature was limited to second-generation Quad-Motor R1T and R1S models. The latest software update brings Launch Mode to Gen 1 Quad-Motor models and both generations of Dual-Motor Performance EVs. To activate Launch Mode, drivers will need to select Sport Mode, tap the flag icon, and then simultaneously press and hold the brake and accelerator pedals.
Enhanced Comfort and Driver Assistance
Beyond performance, the update introduces enhancements to comfort features and advanced driver assistance systems.
- Lowered Kneel Mode: Rivian has introduced a new “Lower” setting for Kneel Mode, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s ride height for easier entry and exit. This new setting, in addition to the existing “Low” setting, can reduce the R1T and R1S ride height by an additional inch on average, offering greater convenience.
- Unhindered Driver Assistance: A significant improvement for drivers utilising advanced systems like Highway Assist and Universal Hands-Free is that changing drive modes or other vehicle settings will no longer disengage these systems. This ensures a more seamless and uninterrupted driving experience.

Tackling the Cold: Improved Battery Management
Rivian has also focused on improving the R1’s performance and efficiency in colder climates.
- Battery Warmth Indicator: The update introduces a clear indicator on the battery icon within the display and the Energy App. This visual cue informs drivers precisely how much energy is being utilised to maintain the battery’s optimal operating temperature.
- Range Availability Display: A blue shading graphic on the Driver Display and in the mobile app will now signify if a portion of the vehicle’s range is temporarily unavailable due to the battery pack not yet reaching its ideal operating temperature.
- Optimised Battery Warming: The company has refined the process of battery warming during charging, making it more efficient. This improved pre-conditioning of the battery pack aims to enhance range recovery and ensure peak performance even in cold weather conditions.
This comprehensive software update underscores Rivian’s dedication to refining the R1 ownership experience, offering greater functionality, improved performance, and enhanced usability across its electric vehicle lineup.
