Knights Star Fletcher Sharpe Dodges Major Injury, Set for Swift Return
Newcastle Knights fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief as their dynamic five-eighth, Fletcher Sharpe, is expected to miss only a single game of NRL action following a concerning knee injury sustained during the team’s season-opening victory in Las Vegas. The Knights kicked off their campaign in impressive fashion, with fullback Kalyn Ponga showcasing a return to his scintillating best in their hard-fought 28-18 win over the Cowboys.
Under new coach Justin Holbrook, the decision to partner Sharpe in the halves proved an inspired one, with the electrifying playmaker crossing for the very first try of the NRL season. However, the jubilation was short-lived as Sharpe went down clutching his knee while defending in the line.
Initial fears of a dreaded ACL tear loomed large, especially after Sharpe was seen hobbling from the field. Despite the scare, he managed to return to the field for one more play before departing. Post-match, Sharpe himself attempted to allay fears, assuring fans he didn’t believe the injury was severe.
Subsequent scans, however, confirmed a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury, a setback that will sideline him for an estimated two to three weeks. Fortunately for the Knights, their upcoming schedule includes a bye week, effectively reducing Sharpe’s absence to just one match. He is expected to miss the Knights’ upcoming clash against Manly at Brookvale Oval.
The impact of Sharpe’s presence on the field was undeniable. The Knights appeared a transformed unit with him orchestrating their attack, his blistering pace around the ball proving to be a significant difference-maker throughout the game. Avoiding a lengthy stint on the sidelines is a massive boost for the club, particularly after securing a strong opening-round win.
Speaking immediately after the Las Vegas encounter, Sharpe shared his thoughts on the injury. “It’s obviously frustrating personally, a little niggle in the knee, but I’m obviously pumped for the team,” he stated. “It just wasn’t right. Fingers crossed everything’s all good, I’ll get home and get some scans. I was just kind of side-shuffling and went down. Pain-wise is all good. I’ve got no pain … (but) actually using it is a bit restrictive.”
Holbrook Hails Sharpe’s Impact
Knights coach Justin Holbrook was effusive in his praise for Fletcher Sharpe’s dominant display in the opening 25 minutes of the match. Sharpe was instrumental in the Knights’ early dominance, contributing a try and a try assist that directly led to the team establishing a significant lead.
“He was electrifying,” Holbrook commented. “When he was out there, we looked dangerous every time. We were threatening and well on top after 25 minutes. He was a big part of that.”
Sandon Smith Steps Up, Ponga Shines
With Sharpe sidelined, Sandon Smith is the likely candidate to fill the No. 6 jersey against Manly. The former Roosters playmaker performed admirably when called upon against the Cowboys, notably assisting Kalyn Ponga for a try and setting up another.
However, it was Ponga who ultimately stole the show. His commanding performance drew widespread acclaim, with former Cowboys star Chad Townsend lauding the fullback’s commitment to the club.
“I thought it was a fantastic thing because Kalyn Ponga constantly has to answer questions about his future and his commitment to the Newcastle Knights,” Townsend remarked on SEN Radio. “I thought it was a fantastic sign for Knights fans to put them a little bit at ease to say, ‘He’s here (and) he’s buying in’.”

The strong start to the season, despite the Sharpe setback, signals a promising outlook for the Knights under their new coaching regime. Their ability to overcome adversity and maintain momentum will be a key factor as they navigate the challenges of the NRL season ahead. The return of Sharpe after just one week will undoubtedly provide a significant lift to the team’s aspirations.
