Ted Danson’s Rare Date: Daughter Kate Joins Him at Actors Awards

Ted Danson Shines Alongside Daughter Kate at The Actor Awards

Hollywood veteran Ted Danson cut a dapper figure on the red carpet at the recent Actor Awards in Los Angeles, and he wasn’t alone. The esteemed actor was accompanied by his daughter, Kate Danson, making for a heartwarming family moment at the prestigious event, formerly known as the SAG Awards.

Danson, 78, radiated pride as he posed with his eldest child. Dressed impeccably in a classic navy tuxedo, a crisp white dress shirt, and a black bow tie, he completed his look with polished black dress shoes and his signature black-framed glasses. He was all smiles, with a loving arm around Kate.

His daughter, 46, was a vision in a dazzling sleeveless, floor-length gold sequin gown. The elegant dress, featuring a subtle V-neckline and a daring thigh-high slit, shimmered with every movement. She complemented her striking attire with black open-toe heels and a chic black clutch. The father-daughter duo were photographed holding hands and sharing smiles, a testament to their close bond.

Kate Danson is the daughter of Ted Danson and his second wife, Cassandra ‘Casey’ Coates, to whom he was married from 1977 to 1993. Born on December 24, 1979, Kate has carved out her own successful career in the entertainment industry, following in her father’s footsteps.

Kate Danson: Forging Her Own Path in the Arts

After graduating from the ArtCenter College of Design, Kate initially grappled with her father’s considerable fame. In a 2013 interview, she admitted to a “rebellious” phase where she tried to steer clear of acting, wanting to establish her own identity. However, she soon realised that acting was indeed her passion, bringing her immense joy.

She revealed that both her father and his wife, Mary Steenburgen, were incredibly supportive of her aspirations. They would even run lines with her over the phone. “When I told my dad this was what I definitely wanted to do, he said something like, ‘Welcome to the family business,’” Kate shared. She added that pursuing acting has allowed her to connect with her father on a deeper level, a sentiment she described as “really sweet.”

Kate’s television credits include appearances on popular series such as Raising the Bar and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

A notable moment in her career came in April 2013 when she shared the screen with her father on CSI, portraying the character of lawyer Jill McDermott.

Beyond her television work, Kate has also built a significant presence in the theatre world. In 2017, she joined Triptych Theatre as Co-Artistic Director, spearheading the production of three plays during the 2017–2018 season. She made her directorial debut with John Patrick Shanley’s Tennessee as part of French Waitress, and has also contributed to productions like Adam Rapp’s Nocturne and Bryony Lavery’s Stockholm. Her acting performances have been seen in productions such as French Waitress and The Drowning Girls at the Walker Space in New York City, as well as projects like The Dinner Party, The Protector, and The Wrights, which she also produced. In 2019, she directed a fundraising staged reading of Everything I Ever Wanted To Tell My Daughter About Men at The Wallis Annenberg Theater. Outside of her theatrical pursuits, Kate also works as a birth and postpartum doula and a photographer.

The Actor Awards: A Night Dedicated to Performers

The 32nd Annual Actor Awards, now officially rebranded from the SAG Awards, took place at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. The name change was implemented to better align the show with its iconic statuette, “The Actor,” enhance its global identity, and maintain a sharp focus on performers honouring their peers.

Kristen Bell returned for her third stint as host, having previously emceed in 2018 and 2025. “Having Kristen return to host feels like welcoming back a member of the family. One you actually want to hang out with,” stated show-runner and executive producer Jon Brockett.

The ceremony, streamed live on Netflix, presented awards across 28 categories spanning film, television, and limited series. Each category featured six nominees, with the exception of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which had eight contenders.

Film and Television Nominees Shine

On the film front, One Battle After Another led the nominations with seven nods, closely followed by Sinners with five. The race for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role was highly competitive, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia).

In the television realm, the comedy series The Studio dominated with five nominations, solidifying its position as a favourite among actors.

Surprises and Tributes

As with any awards season, there were notable omissions that sparked discussion. The absence of Cynthia Erivo, widely expected to be nominated for Wicked: For Good, was a significant talking point. Fans also noted the lack of nominations for Gwyneth Paltrow and Dwayne Johnson, and some questioned the limited international representation among the acting nominees. Further discussions arose regarding the omissions of Sentimental Value in film and Death by Lightning in television.

However, the ceremony also delivered delightful surprises, including supporting nominations for Odessa A’Zion (Marty Supreme) and Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), underscoring the diverse talent recognised this year.

Adding a significant touch of gravitas, Hollywood legend Harrison Ford was honoured with the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award. With a career spanning over five decades, Ford has starred in some of cinema’s most iconic franchises, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, and The Fugitive, establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most bankable and enduring leading men. “I am deeply honored to be chosen as this year’s recipient of the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award,” Ford stated. “To be acknowledged by my fellow actors means a great deal to me. I’ve spent most of my life on film sets, working alongside incredible actors and crews, and I’ve always felt grateful to be part of this community.”

Representing the next generation of talent, Yerin Ha, the breakout star from Bridgerton, served as this year’s Ambassador for The Actor Awards. “Being named The Actor Awards Ambassador is such an honor because this ceremony is about actors celebrating actors,” Ha remarked. “There is something uniquely powerful about being recognized within your own community. As someone who cares so deeply about the craft and about collaboration, it means so much to represent the next generation of actors and be part of an event that uplifts storytelling.”
