Cowboys Forward Injury Confirmed

The North Queensland Cowboys are facing a significant blow to their forward pack, with prop Thomas Mikaele sidelined for at least the next six weeks due to a medial knee injury. The injury occurred during a controversial tackle in the Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Newcastle Knights in Las Vegas.

The incident involved Knights forward Tyson Frizell making contact with the lower portion of Mikaele’s leg in what was described as a “cannonball” tackle. Despite the severity of the impact, Frizell was only penalised and placed on report, avoiding a sin bin.

Coach’s Disappointment with Tackle Handling

Cowboys coach Todd Payten expressed his frustration with the officiating decision following the match. “I’m really disappointed with how the Tom Mikaele incident was handled,” Payten stated during his post-match press conference. He highlighted the perceived inconsistency, noting that Cowboys fullback Kalyn Ponga was able to continue playing after an incident, while Mikaele faces a lengthy layoff. “Considering, you know, Kalyn gets up and plays on and Tom’s out for the next six weeks. I’d just like a bit of consistency, but we’ll see what happens through the week.”

Payten also emphasised the impact of Mikaele’s absence on the team’s strategy during the game. “It (Mikaele’s injury) did hurt us. We had to use four interchanges prior to halftime even though the plan was to use three.”

Frizell Escapes Suspension

In a further blow to the Cowboys, Tyson Frizell will not face a suspension for the tackle. He was issued a Grade 1 dangerous contact charge, resulting in a $1000 fine. While this decision may offer little comfort to the injured player and his team, it means Frizell will be available for the Knights’ upcoming fixtures.

Mikaele’s Extended Absence and Projected Return

Mikaele’s injury means he will miss a crucial stretch of the season for the Cowboys. His absence will be felt in games against:

  • Wests Tigers
  • Gold Coast Titans
  • Melbourne Storm
  • St George Illawarra Dragons
  • Brisbane Broncos

His projected return is slated for Round 7, when the Cowboys are set to face the Manly Sea Eagles. This six-week period will test the depth of the Cowboys’ forward rotation as they navigate these challenging matchups.

Filling the Void in the Forward Pack

The starting spot vacated by Mikaele presents a selection dilemma for Todd Payten. Mikaele’s inclusion on the bench for Round 1 was a surprise to some, and his absence now opens the door for other players to step up. The most likely candidates to fill his role are utility player Harrison Edwards or John Bateman. Notably, Bateman was surprisingly overlooked for the Round 1 squad, making his potential return to the starting lineup a key talking point.

Coach Payten is expected to confirm his team’s lineup to face the Wests Tigers on Tuesday afternoon, where the adjustments to Mikaele’s absence will become clearer. The team will need to regroup quickly and find a way to compensate for the loss of their key prop as they look to rebound from their opening-round defeat.
