Mary Byrne’s Shocking Dating Revelation

X Factor Star Mary Byrne Seeks Love on First Dates Ireland After Decade-Long Break

Former X Factor contestant Mary Byrne is set to make a surprising appearance on First Dates Ireland, revealing a decade-long hiatus from the dating scene. The 66-year-old singer from Ballyfermot is hoping to find a genuine connection on the show with her potential match, Gerry Quigley.

A preview clip has already given viewers a glimpse of the moment Gerry realised he was on a date with the well-known hitmaker, a revelation that visibly took him by surprise.

Speaking ahead of her episode’s airing, Mary shared the candid details of her last dating experience and her motivations for seeking love again after such a significant break.

“It’s been 10 years since I had a date,” Mary confessed. “Of course, he didn’t know who I was – well, that’s what he said. But it all came out in the end that he did, and it just went pear-shaped.” She elaborated on the disappointment, stating, “Instead of being honest with me and saying, like, ‘I know who you are,’ it kind of knocked me for six.” This experience led her to a firm decision: “I just said, ‘That’s it. I am not going to do it anymore, because you don’t know who you’re meeting if they know (who you are).’”

Mary’s ideal dating scenario is one where her celebrity status is not a factor. “I want them not to know me,” she explained. “Just like First Dates, I got to know this guy really well. I mean, prior to you seeing what you see, we had a great conversation and we had a great laugh. He had no idea, and I was so relaxed. And that’s what I want from a date.”

The initial years following her X Factor journey were intensely focused on her career, leaving little room for romance. “When I came out of The X Factor for us, I had two solid years of work, so I had no way of thinking about relationships or anything like that,” Mary recalled. She also touched upon past emotional wounds, adding, “And prior to, you know, having my daughter, I was hurt and I have a wall up that’s always going to be there. The wall got bigger when I went to The X Factor and I came out of The X Factor. So in the 10 years after that one date, it kind of, yeah, it kind of knocked me. I just decided I wasn’t going to do it.”

While she has maintained some level of platonic affection, Mary admitted to a reluctance to fully invest emotionally. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a cuddle and a kiss every so often off a nice-looking fella,” she said with a laugh. “But as regards to giving myself over in the last 10 years, it was scary, and I just didn’t do it.”

At 66, Mary feels it’s the right time to explore new possibilities in her personal life. “I’m 66 now, and you know, it’s time to branch out and see what I can do and what I can’t do in regards to relationships,” she stated. A long-standing concern for Mary has been finding someone who values her for her true self, rather than her public persona. “And it’s always been a scary thing for me since I came into this side of the business that people would want me for who I am and not for being the so-called celebrity, but I want them to want me.”

The prospect of finding love on First Dates Ireland offers Mary a unique opportunity to connect with someone in a more natural, unscripted environment. The show’s premise allows for genuine conversation and the discovery of shared interests, free from the pressures of pre-existing fame. For Mary, this setting is crucial for building the kind of authentic connection she desires.

Her journey on First Dates Ireland represents a brave step forward, breaking down the walls she’s built over the years and embracing the possibility of a new chapter filled with companionship and genuine affection. The audience will undoubtedly be rooting for Mary as she navigates the complexities of dating after a decade and seeks a love that sees beyond the spotlight.
