Gleeson Shines: Inside the Oscar Wilde Awards

Domhnall Gleeson Shines at Oscar Wilde Awards as Awards Season Peaks

As the glitz and glamour of awards season reaches its zenith, Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson has been a prominent figure, most recently celebrated at the prestigious Oscar Wilde Awards. These annual accolades are dedicated to recognising and honouring Irish talent and its significant contributions to the global stage. The ceremony, held in the lead-up to the Academy Awards, marks a significant moment for those in the entertainment industry.

This year’s event held particular significance as it commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Oscar Wilde Awards. The evening was a star-studded affair, with Domhnall Gleeson himself receiving his honour from none other than J.J. Abrams, a previous recipient and a director who has collaborated with Gleeson on multiple occasions.

Abrams, who helmed Gleeson in three instalments of the blockbuster Star Wars franchise, kicked off the proceedings with a touch of humour. He playfully expressed his mock disappointment that Gleeson hadn’t made it onto Vogue Australia’s esteemed list of the 70 most famous redheads. This lighthearted jab set a warm and convivial tone for the evening.

The director then transitioned to a more heartfelt tribute, showering praise upon the accomplished actor. Abrams lauded Gleeson’s immense talent and widespread recognition, quipping that “the only way he could be more famous would be if he were friends with Taylor Swift, which he is.” He continued, highlighting the actor’s exceptional qualities: “I’ve been blessed in my career to work with a great number of wonderful actors, but none more brilliant. kind, dedicated, caring, funny, compassionate, famous or ginger.”

Upon accepting his award, Domhnall Gleeson shared an amusing anecdote from his time working on the Star Wars films. He confessed to struggling with a particular line of dialogue, so much so that he resorted to a rather unconventional method to memorise it. Gleeson recounted how he would record himself delivering the line during his breaks and then play it on repeat while he napped, harbouring a hopeful theory that this would embed the line into his subconscious through his dreams.

However, his strategy proved to be counterproductive. Instead of mastering the line, Gleeson admitted that he ended up “making Adam Driver forget all of his lines, and made Andy Serkis forget all of his lines.” In a self-deprecating jest, he added, “needless to say, that when J.J. came back to write and direct the next Star Wars film, I was unsurprised to learn that my character was killed off pretty early on in the film and did not exit with his dignity intact.” This lighthearted confession drew laughter and applause from the audience, showcasing Gleeson’s ability to find humour in his professional experiences.

The Oscar Wilde Awards ceremony also paid tribute to other distinguished individuals from the Irish and Irish-American entertainment sphere. This year, acclaimed Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin and celebrated Irish-American actress Maura Tierney were also honoured for their remarkable contributions to their respective fields. Their inclusion further underscored the breadth and depth of Irish talent being recognised on the international stage.

The evening served as a vibrant celebration of Irish creativity and its profound influence across various artistic disciplines, from acting to filmmaking. The Oscar Wilde Awards continue to be a cornerstone event, shining a spotlight on the exceptional individuals who are shaping the landscape of global entertainment.
