Overview of the Mid-Season AFL Draft
The Australian Football League (AFL) has officially released its list of players who have nominated themselves for the upcoming Mid-Season Draft, set to take place on Tuesday, May 26. As of now, 185 players have submitted their names for consideration by clubs. The deadline for self-nomination is 3pm on Monday, May 25.
Players have the option to attach either a six or 18-month contract to their name, with 26 players opting for the longer-term agreement. Among the most anticipated names in this year’s draft is Jaxon Artemis, a 20-year-old player from Western Australia representing the Tasmania Devils. Artemis has taken a break from his VFL duties to ensure he remains injury-free ahead of the draft night.
Richmond is expected to make Artemis their first pick, marking a significant move for the club. Currently, 10 clubs — including Richmond, West Coast, Port Adelaide, GWS, St Kilda, Collingwood, Western Bulldogs, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Hawthorn — have at least one selection in the draft. These teams have added players to their long-term injury lists, increasing their chances of acquiring new talent.
Notably, the Eagles and Power are the only clubs as of Saturday to have two selections available in the draft. This provides them with more flexibility during the selection process.
