Leeds Overcome Wembley Heartbreak with Victory Over Burnley
Leeds United made a strong statement of intent by securing a 3-1 victory over already-relegated Burnley at Elland Road. This win marked a significant step towards Premier League safety following their recent disappointment at Wembley, where they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.
The match began with a stunning long-range goal from Anton Stach, who found the back of the net with a powerful low shot from 30 yards out in the eighth minute. This early strike set the tone for the home side, who dominated the first half and kept Burnley pinned in their own half.
Stach, who had been sidelined for four games due to an ankle injury, was back in the starting line-up and immediately made an impact. However, his subsequent free-kick was off-target, and Ao Tanaka also missed the target with a shot that went over the crossbar.
Burnley, who had already been confirmed as relegated after a 1-0 loss to Manchester City, showed resilience in the first half. They defended well under pressure and were only briefly troubled by James Ward-Prowse’s deflected shot, which was easily saved by Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
The second half saw Leeds take control with two quick goals. In the 52nd minute, a sweeping move down the right flank led to Noah Okafor scoring with a volley into the far corner. This was Okafor’s eighth league goal of the season and his fourth in as many matches.
Just four minutes later, Calvert-Lewin added a third goal for Leeds, capitalizing on a parried shot from Tanaka. This goal was Calvert-Lewin’s 12th of the season and sparked chants of “We are staying up” and “United are back” from the home fans.
Despite the deficit, Burnley responded through Loum Tchaouna in the 71st minute. The French forward scored with a well-taken goal after racing onto a through-ball from Jaidon Anthony. This goal provided a brief lift for the visitors, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.
Daniel Farke made tactical substitutions, bringing on Sean Longstaff and Brenden Aaronson to help maintain control. The home side managed the final eight minutes of stoppage time comfortably, extending their unbeaten league run to six matches.

Leeds’ third win in four league matches saw them climb to 14th in the table, nine points clear of the bottom three. With their relegation rivals set to play later in the weekend, this result gives them a crucial advantage in the race for survival.

Leeds’ former owner, Andrea Radrizzani, was in attendance and witnessed the opening goal from Stach. His presence highlighted the significance of the win for the club and its supporters.

The performance demonstrated the team’s determination to bounce back from their recent setbacks. With key players stepping up and the fans showing unwavering support, Leeds are moving in the right direction. The victory not only boosted their confidence but also reinforced their position in the Premier League.
