Swans Star Praises Goodwin Ahead of Dees Showdown

A New Era for the Sydney Swans

Sydney speedster Justin McInerney has been vocal about his admiration for Simon Goodwin, who has played a pivotal role in the Swans’ strong start to the AFL season. After being appointed as director of coaching and performance at Sydney following his departure from Melbourne last year, Goodwin is set to face his former team for the first time when the Demons travel to the SCG on Sunday.

McInerney credits Goodwin for transforming the Swans into serious contenders for the premiership, especially after they missed the finals last season. He described the coach as “amazing” and highlighted the impact he has had on the team’s performance.

“It’d be rude not to say that a lot of credit for our game this year has come from him,” McInerney told AAP. “The way that he’s taught us and coached us on the roles, he’s given us a different aspect.”

A Strong Start for McInerney

McInerney, who is enjoying a career-best season, has taken on more responsibility in the midfield and has quickly formed a strong bond with Goodwin. The pair meet once or twice a week to discuss the game and prepare for upcoming matches.

Goodwin, who was once a champion midfielder for Adelaide, has been instrumental in helping McInerney develop his skills. “He’s been great for me and it’s really great to have him at the club,” McInerney said.

In January, Goodwin praised McInerney as a player to watch this season, alongside other key players like Callum Mills, Isaac Heeney, Nick Blakey, and Dane Rampe. “But I’ve been really impressed with some of the football IQ of Justin McInerney, he’s one guy that stands out in that space,” Goodwin said.

McInerney’s Performance This Season

McInerney has been performing exceptionally well this season, averaging 25.6 disposals per game. His standout performance came in the opening-round demolition of Carlton, where he scored three goals and recorded 31 possessions.

Sydney’s Rise and Melbourne’s Surprise

Sydney (6-1) are currently leading the ladder, while Melbourne has been a surprise packet this season, sitting fourth under new coach Steven King. The Demons have shown significant improvement, thanks to their new leadership.

Brodie Grundy’s Milestone

Star Swans ruck Brodie Grundy, who spent one season at Melbourne, will be playing his 250th game, having also played at Collingwood. McInerney praised Grundy’s follow-up skills, calling him “the best in the comp for follow-up ruckmen.”

“He’s probably the best in the comp for follow-up ruckmen,” McInerney said. “He pushes forward, gets on the end of a couple of goals. We love him. He’s a different cat, but we love what he brings to the table.”

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, both teams will be looking to maintain their form and continue their respective journeys. With Goodwin’s influence and McInerney’s growth, the Sydney Swans are well-positioned to challenge for the premiership. Meanwhile, Melbourne’s unexpected rise under Steven King shows that the competition is as fierce as ever.
