Brandon Smith’s Ongoing Struggles with Injuries
Brandon Smith’s challenging journey with injuries continues to unfold, particularly with a recent timeline set regarding his calf injury during South Sydney Rabbitohs’ victory over the Melbourne Storm on Anzac Day last week. The situation has raised concerns among fans and team officials alike, as Smith faces another setback that could impact his performance for the remainder of the season.
Smith had shown signs of recovery in his return fortnight, delivering strong performances against the Raiders and the Dragons after overcoming a previous preseason calf injury. However, his latest issue has once again forced him to take a step back from the field. According to reports, he will be sidelined for a month following an early exit from the game last Saturday. This is the same calf that previously kept him out of action for several weeks during the preseason, highlighting a recurring challenge for the player.
Coach Wayne Bennett provided an update on Smith’s condition, expressing disappointment over the news. “He’s pretty disappointed, to be honest with you, he’s out for another month,” Bennett stated to the media. He added, “He loves to play and he brings a lot to the team. But we all have our disappointments so he’s got to handle it.”
Adam Elliot Steps In
With Smith’s absence, Adam Elliot will step into the lineup to fill the gap. Elliot has also been dealing with a lingering calf problem throughout the early weeks of the season. His move to South Sydney came after a difficult year at the Newcastle Knights in 2025, where injuries hindered his ability to play consistently.
Elliot signed with the Rabbitohs on a one-year deal aimed at strengthening their forward pack. This opportunity marks his first chance to showcase his skills in the NRL since round 12 of the previous season. “He kept ringing me … He wanted to be here, so I’m happy for him to be. He’s been very good,” Bennett said about Elliot’s commitment.
Bennett also praised Elliot’s perseverance. “Adam hasn’t played for the latter period of last year and we’re seven or eight weeks into the season and he’s getting his first game. I admire them (players) for how they persevere and want to be back and playing with their teammates.”
Upcoming Matchup
The Rabbitohs are set to travel up the motorway to face the Newcastle Knights on Sunday. The Knights are expected to welcome back key players Kalyn Ponga and Bradman Best from injury, adding to the excitement of the match. This encounter will test the resilience of both teams as they navigate through the challenges of the season.
As the Rabbitohs prepare for this crucial game, the focus remains on how the team will adapt to the loss of Smith and the potential of Elliot stepping up to the challenge. With the support of their fans and the determination of their players, the team is poised to continue their journey in the NRL, despite the obstacles they face.
