Three key roles open in Australian cricket after five-year captain steps down

Simon Helmot Steps Down as Melbourne Renegades Coach

Melbourne Renegades coach Simon Helmot has made the decision to step down from his role after five years at the helm of the T20 franchise. His departure marks another significant change in the Australian cricket landscape, with the team now seeking a new head coach.

Helmot took over as the head coach of the Renegades in 2021 and quickly made an impact, guiding the team to a second-place finish in his first season. However, it was in 2024 that he truly cemented his legacy, leading the women’s team to their first-ever WBBL title. The victory came against the Brisbane Heat in a thrilling final, marking a historic moment for the franchise.

The Renegades have expressed deep appreciation for Helmot’s contributions. James Rosengarten, the General Manager of the Renegades, praised Helmot’s influence on the club and the broader Victorian cricket community. “Simon has been an extraordinary Renegades person for a long time, and someone who has given so much to our club,” he said in a statement. “He’s not only delivered success on the field but has had a profound impact on the people and the environment around him.”

Helmot’s ability to connect with players, staff, and fans has left a lasting impression. His leadership style and dedication have helped shape the culture of the Renegades, and his departure is a significant loss for the team.

Despite his exit, Helmot is currently working in India as an assistant coach under Daniel Vettori at the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. The franchise includes Pat Cummins, the men’s Test skipper, as captain. However, Helmot and the Renegades have decided to part ways just 18 months after his successful tenure.

Three T20 Sides Seeking New Coaches

Helmot’s departure means three Australian T20 franchises are now looking for new head coaches. The Sixers and Thunder men’s sides are among those seeking replacements, following recent changes in coaching staff.

Greg Shipperd, the long-time mentor of the NSW side, was recently controversially axed from his role despite guiding the Sixers to the BBL final this year and winning the One-Day Cup with the Blues. Meanwhile, the Thunder parted ways with Trevor Bayliss after five years in charge of the men’s T20 side.

Cricket NSW has appointed Brad Haddin, a former Australia Test star, to take over the Blues’ One-Day Cup and Sheffield Shield sides from Shipperd. However, Haddin will not be leading the Sixers or Thunder in the BBL.

Several names have emerged as potential candidates for the coaching roles. Matthew Mott, the former Australian women’s coach, and white-ball allrounder James Hopes have been heavily linked with the Sixers job. Shane Watson and Dan Christian are also considered frontrunners for the Thunder position.

With these changes, the Australian T20 scene is set for a fresh chapter, as teams look to find new leaders to guide them into the future.
