Overworked Bumrah: Will MI Give Him a Break in IPL 2026?

Jasprit Bumrah Faces Heavy Load in IPL 2026

The Mumbai Indians have had a challenging season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 so far, with their star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, bearing the brunt of the responsibility. In a recent match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Bumrah did his best to defend a target of 160 runs. He managed to take the wicket of the in-form Sanju Samson and delivered an economical 20 runs from his three overs. However, despite his disciplined performance, CSK managed to chase down the target with ease, as they adapted well to the other bowlers.

This has become a recurring issue for the Mumbai Indians this season, where Bumrah’s efforts are often not supported by the rest of the bowling unit. With 33 overs bowled in nine matches this year, Bumrah has maintained an impressive economy rate of 8.61. Yet, the other bowlers have struggled to contain the opposition, leading to a lack of balance in the team’s bowling attack.

Concerns Over Bumrah’s Workload

The increasing workload on Bumrah has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike. Since the T20 World Cup, he has been playing cricket continuously, and the toll on his body is becoming evident. The other bowlers in the Mumbai Indians squad have not provided much support, and Bumrah’s own performance seems to be affected by overuse.

Despite these challenges, the Mumbai Indians are still in the race for the playoffs, although their performances have been inconsistent. A pressing question remains: has Bumrah been rested from the remaining games? According to Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of Mumbai Indians, there is no indication of such a move.

Jayawardene stated:

“We are not yet out, are we? It’s too early for me to say anything; we still have five more games; anything can happen for us. We just need to finish the tournament positively and see what happens. There’s a lot more cricket to be played; I don’t think mathematically we’re out from the tournament, so I’m going to fight, and I’m sure the rest of the boys will do the same as well.”

Lessons from the Past and Future Implications

The concern over Bumrah’s workload is even more significant when considering his past experiences. After the 2022 IPL, where he played all 14 matches for the Mumbai Indians, taking 15 wickets in 53.2 overs, he suffered a stress fracture in his back, which kept him out of action for 11 months.

During the 2022 T20 World Cup, India’s batting collapsed in the semi-finals, and if Bumrah had been available, it is possible that India could have defeated England. Additionally, he faced another back injury in 2025, prompting a focus on managing his workload. This led to his omission from key Test matches against England earlier this year.

Looking ahead, Bumrah faces a tough road with upcoming fixtures in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2027. He has not played any ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final and needs careful management to remain fit across all formats of the game.

The Road Ahead for Mumbai Indians

For now, the Mumbai Indians will continue to fight and hope for a turnaround in their campaign. However, the real question remains whether they should rest their best bowler or risk further draining him. With the stakes high and the competition fierce, the decisions made by the coaching staff could play a crucial role in determining the team’s success in the remainder of the season.
