Key Player Injuries and Squad Changes Ahead of AFL Matches
Several key players have been ruled out of their respective AFL matches this weekend due to injuries, leading to significant changes in team lineups. The most notable absence is that of Brownlow medallist Matt Rowell, who has been sidelined for the clash between the Gold Coast Suns and GWS at People First Stadium.
Rowell, a 24-year-old forward, has been dealing with an ankle injury, which has kept him from playing in the match. This comes after he missed the start of the season due to a broken finger sustained while representing Victoria in State of Origin. However, his latest injury is not considered serious, and he is expected to return to action soon.
The underperforming Gold Coast Suns, who have a record of 4-3 so far this season, made five changes to their lineup for the game. Alongside Rowell, ruckman Jarrod Witts and Zeke Uwland will also be absent as the team manages player workloads. Additionally, Jed Walter and Jake Rogers were left out of the squad.
In their place, Ned Moyle, Alex Davies, Sam Clohesy, Joel Jeffrey, and Lachlan Gulbin have been included in the starting team. These additions are aimed at maintaining team strength despite the absences.
On the other side, GWS has made two changes to their lineup. Ruckman Kieren Briggs will replace the injured Nick Madden, who suffered a knee injury. Defender Joe Fonti has also come into the team, taking the place of Ollie Hannaford, who was dropped from the squad.
Sydney’s Boost with Isaac Heeney’s Return
Meanwhile, Sydney has received a boost with the return of star midfielder Isaac Heeney, who is set to play in Sunday’s clash against Melbourne at the SCG. Heeney had been sidelined due to a calf injury, but he is now fit and ready to contribute to the team’s performance.
Lewis Melican will take the place of Tom McCartin, who is recovering from a knee injury. Harry Cunningham, on the other hand, has been dropped from the lineup.
Melbourne’s Defensive Reinforcements
Melbourne has also seen some positive developments, with defender Harrison Petty returning to the team. Petty had been experiencing dizziness due to a suspected vestibular migraine during the match against Brisbane a fortnight ago. However, he has since recovered and is available for selection.
Patrick Cross is also back in the squad, while Jai Culley and Xavier Taylor have been omitted. Culley is out due to a knee injury, and Taylor has been left out of the lineup.

These changes highlight the dynamic nature of AFL competitions, where teams must constantly adapt to injuries and form. As the weekend matches approach, fans can expect to see new faces on the field, bringing fresh energy and strategies to the games.
