Kirkman spills: Simmons nearly starred as Cecil in Invincible

The Unexpected Role Shift in Invincible

The animated series Invincible, created by Robert Kirkman, has become a fan-favorite for its gripping storyline and powerful character portrayals. However, one of the most interesting behind-the-scenes stories involves J.K. Simmons, who ultimately became the voice of Omni-Man, the series’ central antagonist.

In an interview on The Escape Pod Podcast, Kirkman revealed that Simmons was initially offered a different role in the show—Cecil Stedman, a high-ranking official in the Global Defense Agency. According to Kirkman, the team believed Simmons would be a great fit for the part, but the actor had other ideas.

A Change of Plans

Simmons reportedly read the script and immediately decided he wanted to play a different character instead. “I think we initially thought he’d be kind of interesting to play Cecil, and then when he read the script, he just went, like I really don’t want to do this; I’m going to do Omni-Man,” Kirkman shared during the interview.

This decision led to a complete shift in casting. Instead of playing Cecil Stedman, Simmons took on the role of Nolan Grayson, while Walton Goggins was cast as the voice of Cecil Stedman. This change turned out to be a pivotal moment for the show, as Goggins’ portrayal of Cecil has since been praised for his calm and controlled tone, which perfectly suits the character.

The Impact of J.K. Simmons’ Performance

Kirkman emphasized how crucial Simmons’ performance has been to the success of Invincible. “It’s almost impossible to picture anybody other than J.K. Simmons voicing this character. Because it brings such gravitas. And at the same time, it has such a range of emotions,” he said.

Simmons’ involvement helped shape the entire narrative of the series, particularly in developing the protagonist’s relationship with his Viltrumite heritage. His ability to bring depth and complexity to the role of Omni-Man made the character more than just a typical villain. In fact, Simmons even admitted he didn’t know much about Invincible at first, but felt an instant connection due to his kids being around the same age as the characters.

Developing a Complex Character

Moreover, Simmons played an active role in shaping Omni-Man’s personality. He worked closely with Kirkman to develop the character as a complex mix of two beings rather than just a cold, unemotional antagonist. This collaboration added layers to the character, making him more relatable and compelling for the audience.

Future of Invincible and Live-Action Possibilities

When asked about the possibility of a live-action Invincible movie, Kirkman acknowledged that while J.K. Simmons is the definitive voice of Omni-Man, he isn’t opposed to different casting for a physical performance. He even joked that a younger Ed O’Neill, during his Married… with Children era, captured the “look” and “vibe” of Nolan Grayson perfectly.

However, Kirkman remains committed to the current animated cast. He stressed that Walton Goggins as Cecil Stedman and Michael Dorn as Battle Beast are irreplaceable in their roles for the show’s future. This dedication to the original voice actors highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of the characters as they continue to evolve in the series.
