Queensland’s Fullback Dilemma and Cameron Munster’s Insight
As the first game of the State of Origin series approaches on May 27, the debate over who will take the fullback position for Queensland continues to intensify. Billy Slater, the Queensland coach, is faced with a tough decision between three high-caliber players: Kalyn Ponga, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, and Reece Walsh.
Each of these players brings unique strengths to the table. Ponga made a strong return from injury in his recent performance against the Rabbitohs, showcasing his ability to impact the game significantly. Meanwhile, Walsh has been highlighted as one of the best fullbacks in the competition after leading the Broncos to a title last season. Tabuai-Fidow, who was instrumental in Queensland’s victory in Game Three last year, remains a strong contender as well.
Cameron Munster, the reigning Maroons captain, has shared his thoughts on the matter. He believes that while Ponga’s role might be more specific, he isn’t ready to make a definitive choice on the other two players.
“Who have we got? Hammer (Tabuai-Fidow), Reece and Kalyn,” Munster said on Nine’s 100% Footy.
“It’s going to be a tough one. Hammer was there in Game Three and Reece had a great backend of the year so I’m sure one of them will be pretty handy in their position.”
Munster added that he thinks Ponga might secure the 14 position, given his versatility. “I think Kalyn can play every position, same with Hammer so I’m sure they’ll both be in the 19. With the great rules these days you can have a bench and pretty much pick whoever you want in case someone gets injured. It’s a great luxury to have.”
This bold call to potentially omit Walsh from the fullback spot is significant, especially considering his impressive performance during last year’s finals series, including against Munster’s Storm in the NRL grand final. However, it’s worth noting that coaches can now carry six players on their bench, although only four can be used during the game.
North Queensland Contingent and Team Selection
Munster also praised the North Queensland Cowboys for their performance this season, highlighting how they are setting a new standard in the league. “You could name a handful of players, especially from the North Queensland Cowboys, I think they’re showing everyone at the moment how to play this style of footy,” he said.
Players like Jake Clifford and Tommy Dearden have been standout performers for the Cowboys. Additionally, Briton Nikora, now eligible for Queensland, is expected to add depth to the back-row positions. Munster also mentioned the strength of the back-rowers available, including Heilum Luki and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, who are playing some of the best football of their careers.
However, Munster could only guarantee two spots in the Queensland team. “Who knows what the team will look like? But I can probably guarantee that Patty Carrigan and Harry Grant will probably be in there,” he said.
Slater is set to announce his Queensland squad on Monday, May 18, as the countdown to Origin I continues.
The Future of the Queensland Squad
With the upcoming match, the focus remains on the selection process and the potential changes that could shape the team. The inclusion of players like Nikora and the continued performances of others like Luki and Finefeuiaki add depth to the squad. However, the challenge lies in balancing experience with emerging talent.
The discussions around the fullback position highlight the complexity of team selection. While Ponga’s versatility makes him a strong candidate, the contributions of Tabuai-Fidow and Walsh cannot be overlooked. Each player brings something unique to the table, and the final decision will likely depend on the dynamics of the game and the strategies that Slater chooses to implement.
As the team finalizes its lineup, fans and analysts alike are eagerly anticipating the outcome. The state of the team and the choices made by Slater will play a crucial role in determining the success of Queensland in the upcoming series.
