Health Concerns Surrounding President Donald Trump
Recent developments have sparked renewed concerns about the health of former President Donald Trump, with many Americans questioning whether he is fit to serve in the Oval Office. A new poll highlights growing public skepticism regarding his physical and mental well-being. These concerns come as Trump has been seen making unannounced visits to his local dentist in Florida, rather than using the on-site dental clinic at the White House.
During a weekend trip to Florida, Trump attended regional events, including a PGA tour game at his Doral golf club. On Saturday, it was reported that he visited his local dentist for a scheduled appointment. This is not the first time Trump has opted for a local dentist instead of the White House’s facilities. In January, he made a similar visit, despite the availability of an on-site dental clinic, as reported by USA TODAY.
Other presidents have used the White House operatory, such as former President Joe Biden, who underwent a root canal procedure. The Independent has requested comment from the White House on this matter.
Trump, who will turn 80 next month, has faced numerous health-related discussions over the years. Earlier this year, bruising around his hands raised questions about his health. There has also been ongoing commentary about his mental state, often fueled by his social media posts. Additionally, presidential health trackers have noted his swollen ankles, which were visible during his recent trip to Florida.
Swollen Ankles and Chronic Venous Insufficiency
On Saturday, Trump was photographed with his son, Donald Trump Jr., and his swollen ankles were clearly visible in the images. According to the Cleveland Clinic, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) can cause blood to pool in the legs, leading to swelling and ulcers. Trump was diagnosed with CVI last July, and this condition likely contributes to his swollen ankles.
The American public has taken notice of these medical issues, according to a new poll conducted by The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos. The findings revealed that 59 percent of respondents do not believe Trump has the mental acuity to serve as president. Another 55 percent said they do not think he is physically healthy enough to carry out his duties.
This marks a significant increase from last fall, when only 45 percent of Americans believed Trump lacked the physical health to serve as president.
Unusual Medical Choices and Health Claims
Trump has made some unusual medical choices in the past. One notable example is his daily use of aspirin. According to the Daily Beast, he takes 325 milligrams of aspirin every day, which is four times the doctor-recommended dosage. When asked about this, Trump claimed it was because aspirin helps thin the blood and prevents thick blood from flowing through his heart.
He has also attributed the bruising on his hands to his aspirin use, while the White House previously explained the discoloration as a result of frequent and vigorous handshaking. Despite these concerns, Trump has consistently maintained that he is in excellent health, both mentally and physically.
Comments on Previous Doctors and Health Reports
During a fundraising dinner earlier this year, Trump mentioned his former White House doctor, Ronny Jackson, now a Republican congressman from Texas. He recalled that Jackson had told him he was “by far” the healthiest of the last three American presidents. Trump expressed admiration for Jackson’s comments, saying, “He took a lot of heat for this.”
Jackson had previously praised Trump’s cardiac health, stating it was “excellent” and that he had good genes. However, there have been claims that Trump was sicker than publicly stated when he was treated for Covid at Walter Reed Medical Center in 2021.
Public Perception and Future Health Milestones
Trump has also addressed concerns about footage showing him closing his eyes for prolonged periods during press conferences. He claimed that photographers caught him while he was blinking and that sometimes he closed his eyes because it was relaxing. He also mentioned that some meetings were “boring.”
One of Trump’s previous doctors, Harold Bornstein, gave a glowing health report in 2015, predicting that the Republican candidate would be the healthiest individual elected to the presidency. However, Bornstein later claimed that Trump himself had written the report, telling CNN, “He dictated that whole letter. I didn’t write that letter. I just made it up as I went along.”
The next major medical milestone for Trump will likely be his annual checkup, which is almost a month overdue. His last checkup took place on April 11, 2025.
