A Unique Story from Mark Wood’s IPL Experience
Mark Wood, the England pace bowler, has shared an intriguing story from his time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), offering a rare glimpse into the intense pressures and unusual situations that can arise within the competition. In an interview on BBC’s Strategic Timeout, Wood revealed how he was once pressured by a franchise owner to play a match despite being extremely unwell.
The incident occurred during a season when Wood was suffering from a high fever and was unable to leave his bed. Over the following days, he received regular updates and check-ups from the team doctors.
“I wasn’t very well after about five games, and the next game was in about three days’ time. Every half an hour, the doctor would stay back, come to my room, check on my vitals.”
The Owner’s Unusual Proposal
Despite his worsening condition, the franchise owner continued to call Wood, inquiring about his readiness to play the next match. One day, the owner called and asked, “How’re you feeling? Ready to go?” Wood responded honestly, saying, “Honestly, I’ve eaten and drunk nothing, I still can’t get out of bed.” The owner then suggested, “We’ll get you another doctor, we’ll do this and that.”
This was followed by an offer that left Wood both surprised and amused. The owner proposed sending a private plane to pick Wood up for the match and then return him to his bedside immediately after it was completed.
“The next day, it’s the owner again, ‘How are you feeling?’ and I said, ‘Honestly, I’m still not good.’ He then said, ‘I’ll send a private plane, you get in the plane, play the game. Then I’ll get the plane straight back out and get you back to your bedside.’”
Choosing Health Over the IPL
Wood reflected on the situation, acknowledging how significant the pressure can be during the IPL. He even discussed the matter with his father before making his decision. Ultimately, he chose to prioritize his health over returning to the field.
His career has been marked by a series of injuries, which have often limited his participation in T20 leagues. Wood only had brief stints in the IPL, playing once in the 2018 season for the Chennai Super Kings and again in 2023 with the Lucknow Super Giants. However, he was forced out of the 2023 campaign due to an elbow injury.
Despite the challenges, Wood’s performance in 2023 was notable, as he took 11 wickets in just four matches before his campaign ended prematurely. While the specific franchise or owner involved in the incident was not named, the event has become one of the more peculiar stories from the IPL.
The Pressure on Bowlers in the IPL
The circumstances highlight the unique pressures and expectations faced by bowlers during the IPL. The league is known for its high intensity and demanding schedule, which can push players to their limits. Wood’s experience serves as a reminder of the importance of health and well-being, even in the face of immense pressure.
