Richmond Coach Adem Yze’s Vision for a New Double-Ruck Duo
Richmond coach Adem Yze is aiming to replicate the success of top clubs like Hawthorn and Fremantle by developing a strong double-ruck duo within his team. This strategy has already shown promise with the transformation of key tall player Noah Balta from defense to ruck-forward.
Balta’s transition has been a significant success this season, particularly after his impressive performance against Max Gawn and Melbourne a fortnight ago. His dominance in the club’s recent road win against West Coast was remarkable, with 20 hit-outs, 20 disposals, and three goals to his name.
Yze believes that even when captain and ruck Toby Nankervis returns from his hamstring injury, Balta’s role as a ruck-forward will remain. He envisions a partnership between Balta and Nankervis that could strengthen the team’s ruck presence.
“We have thrown (Balta) around the last couple of years, but out of necessity, ‘Nanks’ out, we might have found something,” Yze said during a press conference. “He is just willing to help, he has been itching to help our team, not only just to get a win but to get our boys fit and our fight back.”
Balta’s performances in recent weeks, including his efforts against Melbourne’s midfield, have shown potential. Yze noted that Balta has been working closely with the midfielders this week and delivered a strong performance again. He hopes this trend continues, leading to a more effective combination once Nankervis returns.
Nankervis, who injured his hamstring in Round 2, is expected to be out for at least three weeks. However, the 31-year-old skipper looked confident as he jumped at the ruck pad alongside young apprentice Samson Ryan on Friday.
Emerging Talent: Kane McAuliffe
Another player who stood out after last Saturday’s performance was 21-year-old Kane McAuliffe, who kicked a goal from his 28 disposals. McAuliffe has emerged as a valuable asset in recent weeks, especially with other midfielders unavailable.
His consistent performance has seen him average 24 disposals across the past three games. Yze credits McAuliffe’s form to hard work and a strategic move with the magnets.
“We moved (McAuliffe’s) role; we moved his magnet to the wing and he started and got that opportunity early in the season and we felt like we found something there,” Yze said. “But we know what he can do inside. He is a terrific guy, he works so hard on his game and he is an amazing teammate.”
McAuliffe’s dedication to his role, whether on the wing or inside, has been commendable. Yze praised his effort in a new position as a winger and highlighted how his performance inside has been rewarding.
“It was awesome for him to get that reward because has been putting in so much effort like I said in a new role as a winger and now in an opportunity, because of the unavailability of different players, he gets the chance to play inside and we know that’s his strength.”
