Bravest Terrier Survives Two Days Trapped in Mud

A Remarkable Rescue

When Glynis Elgey’s terrier, Krakka, went missing during a walk in the countryside, she feared the worst. The four-year-old dog had disappeared, and after two days without any sign of her, it felt like she might never come back. However, a remarkable rescue involving drone technology would change everything.

Krakka was found buried in a rabbit warren, trapped by a mini landslide. Rescuers were led to the exact spot by her faint whimpers, and they were just in time as the terrier’s snout was barely above the soil. It took a specialist dog tracking team 25 minutes to dig her out near the village of Shiptonthorpe in East Yorkshire.

Ms Elgey expressed her relief and joy at finding her pet. “I was so excited when we found her and she was alive. The first thing she did when we got her out was give me a kiss,” she said. She added that Krakka always comes back, and she thought something was stopping her from returning.

After Krakka went missing on April 30, Ms Elgey was advised by a friend to contact Steve Priestman from Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK, an organization that helps reunite missing dogs with their owners.

Mr Priestman shared his experience, saying, “We tried searching for her with a drone but couldn’t find any sign of her.” After a day and a half with no sightings, they decided to focus their efforts on a less obvious area.

It was then that Ms Elgey and her partner, David Hudson, came across an area covered in nettles. They heard a whimper, which turned out to be Krakka. “We set to digging – all we could see was a paw. We were so thrilled – we thought we would never see her again,” she added.

A video captured the moment the determined pet was finally brought to safety. A spokesman for Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK explained, “Thankfully while on the search a whimper was heard which came from a rabbit hole where it’s believed Krakka had gone into.”

The recovery involved DSAR pilot Steve Priestman, ground searcher Jennifer Zarek, along with Krakka’s owners David Hudson and Glynis Elgey. They worked together to dig her out, which took around 25 minutes.

This incredible story highlights the power of technology and community effort in rescuing lost pets. It also shows how even in the most challenging situations, hope and determination can lead to a happy ending. The use of drones in such searches is becoming increasingly common, offering a new way to locate missing animals in difficult terrain.

The experience has left a lasting impact on Ms Elgey and her family. “She always comes back – she never wanders too far and I thought ‘something is stopping her coming back’,” she reflected. This incident serves as a reminder of the bond between pets and their owners, and the lengths people will go to ensure their safety.

As the story of Krakka’s rescue spreads, it continues to inspire others to seek help and use innovative methods in their own searches. The collaboration between technology and human effort proves that even in the most unlikely circumstances, there is always a chance for a miracle.
