Volkswagen’s ID. Polo GTI Could Get a Hotter Clubsport Variant
Volkswagen is reportedly working on a more powerful variant of its upcoming ID. Polo, which could be called the Clubsport. This new model is expected to sit above the GTI in the ID. Polo lineup and may feature some unique features such as fake engine sounds and simulated gear changes.
Florian Umbach, Volkswagen’s head of driving dynamics, spoke to Autocar about the potential Clubsport model. He mentioned that the team is working on something with more power and torque. If history is any guide, this model could wear the Clubsport badge. Mr Umbach also revealed that the team is exploring a similar paddle shift power delivery system found in the electric Hyundai N cars. He explained that this feature is mainly about software for the motor control unit and creating an appropriate soundtrack.
However, there is a note of caution. Mr Umbach stated that the Clubsport would only be approved by the board if the GTI is a commercial success. This suggests that the Clubsport is not guaranteed to be produced unless the GTI performs well in the market.
Specifications of the Regular ID. Polo
Although the regular ID. Polo hasn’t been launched yet, some details have already been revealed. It will be equipped with a 166kW/290Nm motor that drives the front wheels. To help transfer all that power to the ground, the car will have a torque vectoring front axle. It will also come with 19-inch wheels fitted with 235-section tyres.
The ride height has been reduced by 15mm, and progressive steering assistance is standard. The ID. Polo will also feature adaptive dampers, as well as stiffer anti-roll bars and suspension components. These upgrades are expected to provide a more dynamic driving experience.

A New Era for the GTI Badge
When it launches later this year, the ID. Polo GTI will be Volkswagen’s first electric GTI. Until now, the company has been hesitant to apply the iconic GTI badge to its electrified models. Instead, it has used GTE for plug-in hybrid cars and GTX for pure electric models.
According to a British magazine, the first shipments of the ID. Polo GTI are expected to arrive in German showrooms at the end of the year, with the rest of Europe following in 2027. However, the availability of the ID. Polo, including any GTI variants, has not yet been confirmed for Australia.
Future of the ID. Polo Lineup
The development of the Clubsport variant highlights Volkswagen’s continued commitment to performance in its electric vehicles. By introducing a hotter version of the ID. Polo, the company is aiming to appeal to drivers who want both electric efficiency and sporty handling.
The potential inclusion of fake engine sounds and simulated gear changes suggests that Volkswagen is trying to replicate the excitement of traditional performance cars in an electric format. This could be a way to attract younger drivers who are used to the sound and feel of internal combustion engines.
As the automotive industry continues to shift towards electrification, Volkswagen is positioning itself as a leader in the electric performance segment. With the ID. Polo GTI and potentially the Clubsport, the company is showing that electric cars can still offer the thrill of driving.
