Delhi Capitals (DC) ended their poor run of form by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by three wickets, keeping their chances of qualifying for the IPL 2026 playoffs alive. The victory was a crucial one for the team, especially after a series of challenging matches. However, the win came with a price for the DC captain, Axar Patel, who was fined INR 12 Lakhs for a slow over-rate during the game. The league issued a statement confirming that Patel was penalized under Article 2.22 of the official code of conduct.
This fine marks Patel as the third player to be penalized in recent days. Earlier this week, Andy Flower, the coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, was fined for using inappropriate language towards the fourth umpire during the RCB vs MI match on Sunday. Additionally, Tim David, an Australian batter, faced a 30% penalty after being seen giving the middle finger during the same game. These incidents highlight the growing emphasis on maintaining sportsmanship and discipline within the league.
Punjab Kings, who had been leading the table with six consecutive wins, have now suffered their fourth straight loss. This defeat has significantly impacted their playoff hopes. Shreyas Iyer and his team are currently in fourth place with 13 points from 11 games played this season. The latest loss has left them reeling, and they will need to regroup quickly if they want to remain in contention for the playoffs.
Axar Patel found his form at a critical moment in the match. Chasing a daunting target of 211 runs, the visiting side lost their openers, KL Rahul and Abhishek Porel, early in the innings. Sahil Parakh also fell for 13, leaving the Capitals at 33/3 in the fifth over. However, Axar and Tristan Stubbs managed to stabilize the innings, adding 41 runs for the fourth wicket before Stubbs was run out off Cooper Connolly’s throw.
David Miller then joined Axar, and the pair put up a vital partnership of 64 runs for the fifth wicket in just 34 balls. Miller reached his first fifty of the season before being dismissed for a 30-ball 56, which included eight boundaries and two sixes. His performance was crucial in keeping the team in the hunt. Miller’s contribution of 51 runs off 28 balls, featuring three boundaries and four sixes, proved to be a turning point in the match.
Ashutosh Sharma provided a late rescue act for the Capitals. With the team needing 41 runs from 21 balls, Ben Dwarshuis dismissed David Miller, caught well by Prabhsimran Singh. Ashutosh Sharma then took charge, scoring 24 runs off just 10 balls with some powerful shots against his former team. Madhav Tiwari, playing his first game of the season, showed promise with a knock of 18 not out off eight balls. Auqib Nabi Dar sealed the victory with a six and a four, securing a thrilling win for Delhi Capitals with an over to spare.
