A man’s routine trip to a local thrift store turned into an extraordinary moment when he walked away with what he believed was a $1.50 handbag. The owner shared his experience, saying: “I just picked it up in a thrift store, and liked it, and thought it was pretty.” His initial assessment was far from the reality that awaited him.
Van Dell confirmed that the handbag was no ordinary accessory. She described it as “exquisite” and noted that it was constructed using platinum, adorned with carved rock crystal, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and old European cut diamonds. The level of detail and quality was unmistakable.
What made the discovery even more remarkable was its origin. Hidden markings inside the bag revealed that it was crafted by Cartier itself. Van Dell explained that this style, known as Tutti Frutti during the Art Deco period, was highly sought after and represented a unique blend of artistry and luxury.
Initially, the owner expected the piece to fetch around $2,000 to $3,000 at auction. However, the true valuation surprised him completely. Van Dell announced, “Conservatively, in an auction situation today, it’s worth about $35,000. And that’s fair market value.”
The owner was overwhelmed by the news. He responded with a mix of disbelief and emotion, pulling out a tissue to wipe his face. “Wow. Well, that’s something. Sorry,” he said, clearly moved. “Ooh whee. Wow. Wow, it was worth the trip. It’s been so much fun, I’ve had, we’ve just been treated like royalty and I just feel so welcomed.”
