Manchester United Defender Matthis De Ligt Undergoes Back Surgery
Manchester United defender Matthijs De Ligt has undergone surgery to address a persistent back injury that has kept him out of action since the end of November. The 26-year-old Dutch international was expected to return to play in the early part of next season, according to the club’s official statement.
The operation was described as successful, but it is now clear that De Ligt will not be available for the remaining two games of this season. This news also means he will miss the opportunity to represent the Netherlands in the World Cup this summer.
The injury initially caused uncertainty, with the club’s head coach Ruben Amorim initially stating that De Ligt would be sidelined for just one game. However, after months of rehabilitation and training, the situation proved more complex than anticipated.
A Long Road to Recovery
Following Amorim’s departure, Michael Carrick, who took over as interim manager, revealed that De Ligt had been training on the grass at Carrington and expressed hope that the player might return before the end of the season. However, the injury required further intervention, leading to the decision for a corrective procedure.
De Ligt shared his feelings about the ordeal, stating: “Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football. I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”
Club Statement on Recovery
Manchester United released a statement on Friday afternoon ahead of their final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday. The statement said:
“Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury. Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action. De Ligt will now begin a new phase of his recovery and is expected to return for United in the early stages of the 2026-27 season.”
The statement also highlighted De Ligt’s strong start to the season, noting that he played every minute of every Premier League game until the end of November. He was even voted Player of the Month for November by supporters.
Everyone at Manchester United wishes Matthijs well for his recovery and will continue supporting him every step of the way.
Personal Challenges
In addition to the physical challenges, De Ligt has faced personal difficulties this year. Reports from Holland suggest that he has separated from his wife Annekee after just one year of marriage. These challenges add another layer to an already tough period in his life.
