A New Chapter for Brisbane Broncos
Brisbane Broncos are set to welcome a new face as 19-year-old Phil Coates makes his debut against the high-flying Warriors. This moment is not just significant for the team, but also for Coates’ family and the club itself. The legacy of the 2006 grand final triumph serves as a powerful inspiration for the current squad.
At the club’s 20-year luncheon on Friday, several key figures from that historic season were present. Coach Michael Maguire, prop Ben Talty, and five-eighth Ezra Mam attended the event to celebrate the achievements of the 2006 heroes. These legendary players shared their experiences of overcoming immense challenges during that season.
Captain Darren Lockyer reflected on the pressures he faced as a leader, particularly after the side endured a difficult stretch following the State of Origin period. The team had lost five consecutive games, which led to intense media scrutiny. However, they eventually found their rhythm and went on to win the title.
The 2006 season was marked by several strategic positional changes. Veteran player Shane Perry moved to halfback, while Justin Hodges switched to fullback and Shaun Berrigan took on the role of hooker. These adjustments played a crucial role in the team’s success.

Ezra Mam found the stories from the 2006 team deeply moving. He noted the similarities between their situation and the current one, where the Broncos have had to rely on special dispensation from the NRL due to injury concerns.
“It gave me goose bumps listening to them,” Mam said. “We had pretty much the same scenarios ourselves last year in our season, went through a rough patch and came out the other end. (Lockyer) said they had a rough patch after Origin but further along in the season they stuck together and bonded in the finals.”
Shane Webcke, a legendary prop who won the 2006 title, emphasized the expectations that come with wearing a Broncos jersey. Whether a rookie or veteran, players are expected to perform at their best.
“I think that’s a special trait or culture to have. It was pretty special to sit there and watch the ’06 boys up there … all legends of the game,” Maguire said. “They’ve done special things just like the current crop (in 2025). To hear them talk about what the Broncos mean to them, that’s the special part.”
Maguire also highlighted the importance of making the most of the opportunities presented to the current squad. He believes the lessons learned from the past will help guide the team forward.
“For this current crop, it’ll be 2045 for those boys to be doing the same thing.”

Phil Coates’ debut is a moment of pride for his family and the club. His older brother, Xavier Coates, made his debut for Brisbane after coming through the system. Now, it’s Phil’s turn to carve out his own path.
“Phil’s focused on getting out there and performing. That’s the key, being able to perform and be your best,” Maguire said. “I’m looking forward to him being able to create his own story. I think his brother would say the same thing. Xavier’s done some great things in the game. It’s now Phil’s turn to show what he’s capable of. He’s been through plenty, like every player and worked really hard. I think he’ll create his own highlight reel in time.”
