Lucas Torreira Faces Attack in Istanbul
Lucas Torreira, the Uruguayan midfielder who joined Galatasaray from Arsenal in 2022, has been involved in a disturbing incident in Istanbul. The 30-year-old was attacked outside a cafe in the Beyoglu district of the city on Tuesday. According to reports, the attack occurred after Torreira had taken photos with fans. He was then surprised by an alleged assailant who had reportedly been waiting for him outside a shopping centre.
Torreira informed the police that one of his friends and his driver intervened during the incident. The driver reportedly punched the man to separate them. Footage shared by Turkish media showed the suspect being kicked while on the ground before attempting to flee the scene.
The suspect, identified as YY by the police, and Torreira’s driver were both detained, with an investigation launched into the incident. In a statement to the police, Torreira described the events:
“A man came up to me and said he wanted to take a picture with me. After taking a picture with him, I saw another man approaching, and I thought he also wanted to take a picture. After he got close, he suddenly punched me in the left side of my head. I didn’t understand what was happening. I tried to defend myself, and my driver and my friend, who were there at the time, came to my aid to protect me and remove the individual from the scene. After separating us, the person got into a taxi and tried to drive away. I did not physically assault this person in any way.”
Torreira added that he had never seen the attacker before and did not know why the incident occurred. Following the attack, he went to the hospital for a check-up and plans to submit his medical reports to the officials. He reported experiencing a headache as a result of the incident.
“I am filing a complaint and pressing charges against the person in question who assaulted me and caused my injuries,” Torreira stated.
An examination revealed that Torreira had ‘redness between his left eyebrow and eye’ after being struck. A police statement confirmed that the suspect would be brought to court on Wednesday.
It was later reported that the suspect was already under a restraining order for harassing Torreira’s girlfriend. Additionally, the individual had a previous conviction for causing ‘intentional injury’. The suspect was also accused of making threats towards Torreira on social media, with claims that he was jealous of the Galatasaray star’s relationship.
Torreira has been a key player for Galatasaray since joining the club. He has helped the team win four league titles, as well as a Turkish Cup and Super Cup. His presence has been crucial to the club’s success in recent years.
