Billionaire’s Bold Move to Buy Jets from Woody Johnson

A New Hope for the New York Jets?

Mike Repole, a billionaire known for his success in the beverage industry through companies like Vitaminwater and BodyArmor, has recently made headlines with his unexpected interest in the New York Jets. The 57-year-old entrepreneur has expressed a desire to purchase a minority stake in the NFL franchise, potentially working alongside owner Woody Johnson.

On the ‘Portfolio Players’ podcast with Front Office Sports, Repole shared his enthusiasm for the opportunity. “Honestly, I’d love to buy the Jets right now,” he said. “I’m not even a Jets fan, but I’d love to buy that franchise. Again, one of the worst franchises out there. I don’t want to say ‘the worst’ because Woody might see this one day. I’d love to help him out. I’d help him out for free, to be honest with you.”

Repole reinforced his comments on X, stating, “Give me a call Woody. @nyjets. Let’s make the Jets a winning franchise!!!!! The NY fans will love this. I’ll do it for FREE but I’ll buy 1% to 5%!!!! Let’s go Jets!!!!”

Despite his bold statements, Johnson has never considered selling any part of the Jets since acquiring the team for $635 million in 2000 from the estate of Leon Hess. However, the franchise has struggled in recent years, becoming a source of ridicule within the NFL. In the 2022 season, the Jets finished with a dismal 3-14 record under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn.

The Jets once enjoyed success during Johnson’s early years, reaching back-to-back AFC Championship games. However, they have since fallen into a slump, posting an 85-160 record under his ownership and failing to make the playoffs since 2011.

If Repole’s track record with St. John’s University is any indication, he may be the key to revitalizing the Jets. His financial support has played a crucial role in the resurgence of the Red Storm basketball program under head coach Rick Pitino. With his investment, the school has been able to offer players attractive NIL deals, leading to significant improvements in performance.

St. John’s has won back-to-back Big East titles and made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. This success highlights Repole’s ability to turn around struggling programs and could bode well for the Jets if he were to invest.

While the idea of Repole joining forces with Johnson may seem surprising, it presents an intriguing possibility for the future of the Jets. If he can bring the same level of success to the NFL that he has achieved in college basketball, the franchise could be on the path to a much-needed revival. Whether or not this partnership becomes a reality remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Repole’s vision for the Jets is bold and ambitious.
