Slater’s Selection Shock as Maroons Coach Endorses QLD Legend’s Bold Strategy

Queensland Coach Billy Slater Set for Selection Surprises

Queensland coach Billy Slater is expected to make some significant changes when he announces the Maroons’ Origin squad on Monday. One of the most notable developments is the potential inclusion of Kalyn Ponga in the No.7 jersey, which he is reportedly winning over Sam Walker. This decision could mark a major shift in the team’s strategy, especially with the injury of Tom Dearden, the incumbent halfback.

Ponga, the fullback for the Dolphins, has been tipped to take on the halfback role alongside Cameron Munster, the Queensland captain. This move comes after Ponga expressed his preference for the No.1 jersey but also emphasized his willingness to play wherever needed by Slater and the Maroons.

The recent Magic Round clash between the Cowboys and Roosters was seen as a crucial test for the Queensland halfback role between Walker and Jake Clifford. The Cowboys emerged victorious with an 18-12 win, with Walker showcasing a strong kicking game that could be beneficial at the Origin level.

However, it seems that Slater is leaning towards a bold selection decision inspired by Cooper Cronk, the legendary Maroons No.7. Cronk has supported the idea of placing Ponga in the halves for Game 1 against the Blues on May 27 in Sydney. While Cronk did not officially back Ponga for the five-eighth role, he highlighted concerns about Walker’s defensive capabilities and long kicking game, suggesting that the Ponga-Munster combination would be ideal for the Maroons.

Cronk shared his thoughts with News Corp, stating, “I am not part of the selectors, but I would seriously consider Munster at seven, Kalyn Ponga at six, and Reece Walsh at No.1.” He praised Ponga’s consistent performance for Queensland, noting his physicality and ability to handle the ball. Cronk described the proposed lineup as a “wild” choice, but one that he believes would be highly effective for the Maroons.

While Ponga appears set to secure a spot in the Queensland halves, there are concerns about Reece Walsh’s position as fullback. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, the Dolphins’ fullback, is reportedly ahead of Walsh in the race for the position. Tabuai-Fidow demonstrated his prowess during the Dolphins’ impressive victory over Souths, scoring a stunning solo try late in the game.

Walsh, who has faced some inconsistency since recovering from a fractured cheekbone, may need to perform exceptionally well in the upcoming match against the Warriors to secure his place in the Maroons’ starting lineup. It is likely that he will end up on the six-man bench for the Maroons.

In addition to these changes, Briton Nikora, the Sharks back-rower, is expected to benefit from the revised Origin eligibility rules. The Kiwi Test star is anticipated to be included in Slater’s squad. Meanwhile, Jojo Fifita and Selwyn Cobbo are strong contenders for the wing roles, while Thomas Flegler is set to return to the Maroons squad for the first time since 2023. Flegler has made a successful comeback this season following a career-threatening shoulder injury.
