The Debate Over Lachlan Galvin’s Role in the Bulldogs’ Future
The question of whether Lachlan Galvin is a long-term halfback has been a topic of intense discussion among rugby league fans, particularly those supporting the Canterbury Bulldogs. This debate has taken center stage as the club navigates through challenges and decisions that could shape its future.
During a recent episode of The Bye Round podcast, Bulldogs general manager of football Phil Gould addressed this issue directly. He stated that he doesn’t believe Galvin is a long-term halfback. “I don’t think he’s a long-term halfback,” Gould said. “I don’t think we ever had the intention of him being a long-term halfback.”
However, just four hours later, Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo offered a different perspective during a pre-match media conference. When asked about Gould’s comments, Ciraldo emphasized that Galvin is currently the best halfback the team has. “He’s got an opportunity to be a halfback for as long as he wants to be,” Ciraldo said. “The way he’s tracking right now is pretty good when you consider what he’s had to go through off the field, what he’s had to learn on the field.”
Ciraldo highlighted Galvin’s resilience and ability to handle pressure at a young age. “I don’t think you see a lot of 20-year-old halfbacks doing some of the things that Lachlan Galvin is able to do right now.” He also praised Galvin’s character, stating that he is among the toughest players in the club. “He’s played injured at times since he’s got to this club, but he’s also had to deal with way too much attention than what a 20-year-old should have to deal with, and he has passed with flying colours.”
The Broader Challenges Facing the Bulldogs
While the focus on Galvin remains central, the Bulldogs are facing a range of other issues during their five-game losing streak. These include adapting to rule changes, evaluating the performance of key players like hooker Bailey Hayward and fullback Connor Tracey, and addressing the decline of a once-dominant defense.
Fans have expressed frustration over these challenges, often turning to social media to voice their concerns. Questions about whether Galvin would be better suited in a different role—such as lock or even not at all—have become common topics of discussion.
Phil Gould, known for his media savvy, has generally avoided direct questions about the Bulldogs. However, this week marked a shift as he appeared on several podcasts, including 100% Footy and Six Tackles with Gus. During these appearances, he provided insights into the club’s strategy and decision-making.
One of the key takeaways from these discussions was the potential need for Matt Burton to switch positions if he is to remain with the Bulldogs. Additionally, it was suggested that Mitch Woods, a talented but injury-prone halfback, may not make his NRL debut this year. Gould also defended the club’s decision to bring in Adam O’Brien, despite his previous dismissal by the Knights.
The Impact of Player Movements
Speculation about the Bulldogs’ spine has been fueled by meetings with players such as Warriors halfback Luke Metcalf, who signed with the Dragons, and Titans hooker Sam Verrills. Ciraldo acknowledged that these discussions are part of the club’s due diligence. “Every player that comes off contract, there’s got to be a discussion around if it’s in the best long-term interest of your club,” he said.
Gould was photographed meeting with Verrills, and the image quickly made its way into the media. When asked about the potential impact of such photos on players like Hayward, Ciraldo responded cautiously. “Anything can potentially have an effect on someone,” he said. “People making up rumours can have an effect on someone. People writing ridiculous social media comments can have an effect on someone. But in terms of whether that has an effect on Bailey, I don’t think so.”
Ciraldo added that Hayward knows how much the club believes in him and that he is expected to be a long-term Bulldog. Similarly, the club continues to express confidence in Galvin, though the exact position he will play in the future remains uncertain.

The Path Forward for the Bulldogs
As the Bulldogs look to rebuild and adapt, the focus on Galvin’s role remains a critical factor. His development and performance will likely determine the direction of the team in the coming seasons. While opinions differ, one thing is clear: the Bulldogs are committed to finding the right balance between immediate success and long-term growth.
With ongoing discussions about player roles, strategies, and the broader challenges facing the club, the path ahead is anything but straightforward. However, the determination of players like Galvin and the leadership of coaches and management suggest that the Bulldogs are working towards a future where they can return to their former glory.
