Sarah Jessica Parker has long been celebrated for her bold and iconic fashion choices, both on and off the screen. As the character Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, she became a global fashion icon, known for her unique sense of style that included pastel tutus, crop tops, floral chokers, and Manolo Blahnik shoes. However, during a recent outing in New York City, the 61-year-old actress was seen in a completely different light.
On Tuesday, Parker was spotted in a casual outfit that stood in stark contrast to her usual glamorous looks. She opted for baggy blue sweatpants, a gray T-shirt, and an oversized gray cardigan, paired with Ugg slip-ons. The look was further completed by three large tote bags that she carried with her, which added to the impression of a day spent running errands rather than making a fashion statement.
This unexpected appearance surprised fans who are used to seeing Parker in more stylish ensembles. For many, it was a reminder that even the most fashion-conscious celebrities can have days where they prioritize comfort over couture.
Parker’s relationship with Carrie Bradshaw extends far beyond the screen. The two-time Emmy winner has spoken about how deeply connected she feels to the character. In a December 2021 interview with Vogue, she revealed that she kept every piece of clothing and accessory from Carrie’s closet, storing them in a way that organized everything by season, episode, and scene. “I had all of the original stuff in my own storage. Furniture, clothes, everything, packed according to season and episode and scene. I kept every single solitary thing,” she said.
She also shared that she occasionally wears Carrie’s old outfits for special events. In August 2023, she told People that she once wore a costume from the show to a birthday party in England. “I just did it. I was invited to a birthday party in England, and we were already nearby, so I pulled from the archive. It’s one of the few occasions I’ve ever pulled from the archive for personal use. It’s not every day.”
Parker is very deliberate when it comes to choosing which pieces to wear. She considers the context and environment before deciding whether a particular outfit would be appropriate. “What would the circumstances and the environment be that I would be wearing this, and would it be okay and safe, or would it be destroyed?” she asked herself. “I’m very judicious about that,” she added.
The Sex and the City franchise has had a lasting impact on pop culture since its debut in June 1998. The HBO series, which also starred Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, became a cultural phenomenon and launched two feature films. A spin-off series, The Carrie Diaries, followed a teenage Carrie in the 1980s, while a reboot, And Just Like That, ran from 2021 to 2025.
Despite its initial success, And Just Like That did not achieve the same level of popularity as the original series. After the third and final season concluded in August 2025, Parker reflected on her deep connection to Carrie. “Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,” she said in a statement. “I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion.”
