Frail Bruce Dern, 89, Leans on Family at Cannes Red Carpet

A Historic Family Appearance at Cannes

Three generations of the Dern family made a memorable appearance on the Cannes red carpet, showcasing their strong bond and shared passion for the arts. Bruce Dern, an 89-year-old Oscar nominee, was seen supporting his daughter Laura Dern, 59, and her children, Ellery Harper, 24, and Jaya Harper, 21. The family’s presence at the event marked a rare public moment for Bruce and Laura, who had not been seen together since the passing of Laura’s mother and Bruce’s ex-wife, Diane Ladd, in November.

Bruce, known for his iconic roles in films like Nebraska and Coming Home, appeared in a tuxedo paired with a LA Dodgers baseball cap, showing off his signature style. His granddaughter Jaya, following in her mother’s footsteps, recently starred in the Netflix series Roommates. Meanwhile, Ellery has pursued careers as both a model and musician.

Supporting a Family Legacy

Laura Dern, who has been a prominent figure in Hollywood, looked stunning in a silver gown while supporting her father’s documentary Dernsie, which highlights his six-decade-long career. The film, named after a phrase describing Bruce’s improv acting, features appearances from Laura and filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.

Laura and her ex-husband, musician Ben Harper, share two children, Ellery and Jaya. Their marriage lasted from 2005 to 2013, but the couple remains connected through their children.

Bruce has a long history with the Cannes Film Festival, having received the Film Festival Award for Best Actor for his role in Nebraska in 2013. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Coming Home in 1978.

Honoring a Legacy

Bruce and Diane Ladd, who were married from 1960 to 1969, welcomed Laura into their lives during their nine-year marriage. Despite their divorce, they remained close friends. Following Diane’s death, Bruce expressed deep gratitude for her role as a mother to Laura.

“She lived a good life. She saw everything the way it was,” Bruce said. “She was funny, clever, gracious, and a great teammate to her fellow actors. But most importantly to me, she was a wonderful mother to our incredible wunderkind daughter.”

Bruce also praised Diane’s work with late director David Lynch, particularly her performance in Wild at Heart (1990), where she played Laura’s mother opposite Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe. “When he cast her as Laura’s mom in Wild at Heart it felt like the world then really understood her brilliance,” he said.

A Tragic Past and Lasting Impact

The couple faced a tragic loss when their one-year-old daughter, Diane, died in 1962 due to a drowning accident. Diane Ladd candidly discussed this hardship in her 2023 book with Laura titled Honey, Baby, Mine. She revealed how the tragedy affected their relationship and financial stability.

“We were struggling actors. We could hardly make it. We had to stay in the same house where she died because we couldn’t afford to leave. His family could have helped us, but they didn’t,” Ladd said.

A Shared Legacy

Bruce, Ladd, and Laura have a rich history of collaboration in the entertainment industry. They appeared together in several films, including American Cowslip (2009), Mrs. Munck (1995), The Rebel Rousers (1970), and The Wild Angels (1966).

In 2010, the trio became the first relatives to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame simultaneously. Ladd expressed her hopes for the legacy of their stars: “I ask the universe that these three stars right here… may the energy of the three of our lives permeate into their foundation and help each and every one fulfill their destiny with joy and love.”
