Shreyas Iyer Favored for T20I Captaincy
Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has highlighted 31-year-old Shreyas Iyer as the top choice to lead the Indian team in the T20I format. Over recent weeks, there have been significant discussions about Iyer and Sanju Samson being the leading candidates for the role. This development follows Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles with the bat, particularly during the IPL 2026 season with the Mumbai Indians.
In an interview with PTI, Ponting expressed his confidence in Iyer’s potential as a leader. He stated, “There are several contenders, but I feel that Shreyas Iyer is right at the top as a captaincy choice. We all saw how good Shreyas has been with the bat in this format of the game at the start of IPL 2026 season.”
Punjab Kings’ Performance
Punjab Kings, led by the Mumbai-based batter, started their IPL 2026 campaign strongly with an unbeaten run before losing momentum and dropping six consecutive games. Their upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday night is crucial for the visiting side, as it could determine their playoff chances.
It is worth noting that India secured their third World T20 title under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership earlier this year. The 35-year-old led his team to victory over New Zealand in the final held in Ahmedabad, making them the first team to successfully defend their T20 crown. Additionally, the Men in Blue became the first home team to win the world title.
Coach’s Confidence in Iyer
The 31-year-old Iyer began the IPL 2026 season with impressive performances, scoring 279 runs from the first seven matches, including four fifties. However, in the subsequent six games, he managed only 118 runs, with 59 of those coming in a loss against the Delhi Capitals. Recently, Iyer was appointed as the vice-captain of the ODI team, marking his return to the format after nearly two years.
Speaking to PTI, the Punjab coach expressed his belief in Iyer’s ability to regain his form. The 51-year-old said, “He (Iyer) is a more mature player than he has ever been in his career. He is at the top of his game; every player has his own ups and downs, and I am sure he will come back to form in the final game against Lucknow. We have a good chance of winning the game if Shreyas comes up with a big score.”
Key Points to Consider
