BYD’s bold new SUV nears Australian launch

BYD’s New Hybrid SUV Makes Big Strides Toward Australia

BYD’s new hybrid SUV, a strong competitor to the Toyota Prado, is one step closer to making its way to Australia. The vehicle is set to hit showrooms in the United Kingdom before the end of this year, offering a glimpse into what may soon be available in Australian markets. This seven-seater, rugged SUV is a key component of BYD’s broader strategy for the region, and with the Ti7 (also known as the Titanium 7) now appearing in the UK, it seems that the model will not be far behind in Australia.

The Ti7 has already been trademarked in Australia, which suggests that the arrival of the model is imminent. UK models often serve as a reliable indicator of what can be expected in other right-hand drive markets, and the Ti7 that will soon be on British roads is likely to be very similar to the version that will eventually be seen on Australian streets.

A Tough-Looking SUV with Strong Performance

The Ti7 is a bold and robust SUV that stands out with its powerful design. It is positioned as a rival to the 2026 Toyota Prado and the GWM Tank 300, and it features a full electric powertrain. The vehicle is equipped with two electric motors—one at the front axle and one at the rear—providing all-wheel drive capabilities. These are supported by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, which ensures both performance and efficiency.

What makes the Ti7 particularly impressive is its acceleration. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, which is significantly faster than any Toyota Prado ever produced. The vehicle also comes with a 35.6kWh battery, offering up to 127km of pure electric driving range.

Hybrid and Electric Options

While the UK variant of the Ti7 is expected to be a plug-in hybrid, a fully electric version of the model with fast charging capabilities is already available in China. Given the popularity of similar models like the large BYD Sealion 8 SUV in Australia, it is likely that the PHEV version of the Ti7 will be the one arriving here.

The Sealion 8 is a seven-seat SUV with a similar PHEV powertrain, and it will be interesting to see whether the Ti7 will come with a BYD badge or a Denza one. Denza models in Australia are sourced from its premium range in China, while the Ti7 falls under the Fangchengbao brand. However, reports suggest that BYD may claim the Ti7 for itself due to differences in the vehicle’s underpinnings.

Different Branding, Similar Goals

The Ti7 is part of the Fangchengbao adventure brand in China, along with the B5 and B8 models sold by Denza in Australia. However, according to a BYD spokesperson speaking to the UK outlet Autocar, the Ti7 does not share the same rugged ladder frame as the B5 and B8. This means that the Ti7 is not designed for off-roading and will instead focus on being a family-friendly, road-oriented SUV with a tough appearance.

Following this logic, it is likely that the Ti7 will carry the BYD badge in Australia as well. CarsGuide has reached out to BYD Australia for confirmation about the model’s arrival and when it might be available, but the brand has yet to respond.
