Jeff Bezos Defends the ‘Melania’ Documentary Amid Financial Controversy
Jeff Bezos has recently come under scrutiny for his involvement in the documentary Melania, which has sparked a lot of discussion since its release. The film, which focuses on the life of former First Lady Melania Trump, was one of the most expensive documentaries ever produced by a major studio, with Amazon MGM reportedly investing nearly $75 million into the project. Despite the high cost, the film’s box office performance has been underwhelming, raising questions about the decision-making process behind such a significant investment.
The initial buzz around Melania was strong, with the film earning approximately $7 million during its opening weekend. This marked the best debut for a non-music documentary in recent years. However, this momentum did not last, and the film has only managed to gross around $16.5 million worldwide so far. This figure is far below the reported costs, leading many to question whether the project was always intended to be a theatrical success or if it had other goals in mind.
In response to these concerns, Jeff Bezos took to CNBC’s Squawk Box to defend the decision to invest in Melania. He emphasized that the move was a smart business decision and clarified that he had no direct involvement in the production of the film. Bezos stated:
“I see it reported all the time that somehow I was involved in this, but that I had nothing to do with that.”
He further added:
“By the way, it appears it was a good business decision. It did very well in theaters. It’s done very well on streaming. People are very curious about Melania. So even though I had nothing to do with it, it appears that the Amazon team made a very wise business decision.”
A Glimpse into Melania Trump’s Private Life
Beyond the financial debate, Melania also aims to provide a rare look into the private life of the former First Lady. The documentary explores her journey from a private citizen to the First Lady of the United States, offering insights into her role and relationship with her husband, Donald Trump. The film opens with a voiceover that outlines its purpose: to show the American people her life and her journey.
Amazon acquired the movie rights for $40 million, and Melania herself reportedly received $28 million for her involvement. The company also spent around $35 million on marketing, but these efforts failed to recoup the budget, resulting in a total worldwide gross of $16.7 million.
The Brett Ratner-directed film was released without a press screening in January and quickly became one of the most-watched films on Amazon’s internal list when it first streamed.
Ongoing Debate Over Hollywood’s Content Strategy
With Jeff Bezos defending the investment and denying direct involvement, the film’s financial gamble continues to spark debate over Hollywood’s high-stakes content strategy. Critics argue that the massive budget may have been a misstep, while supporters believe that the film’s unique perspective could still resonate with audiences over time.
As the conversation around Melania continues, it raises broader questions about the risks and rewards of producing high-budget documentaries in an industry that is increasingly focused on profitability. Whether the film will ultimately succeed or fail remains to be seen, but its impact on the entertainment landscape is already evident.
