UEFA Unveils Major Overhaul for 2030 World Cup Qualifiers

New Format for International Qualifiers

UEFA has introduced a major overhaul of international qualifiers that will change the way nations compete for spots in the World Cup. This new system is set to be used for the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. The changes aim to make matches more exciting and improve competitive balance.

Under the new format, Europe’s top 36 nations will be divided into three groups of 12 teams in League 1. The remaining teams will compete in League 2. This structure ensures that stronger teams face a mix of opponents, including top seeds, middle seeds, and bottom seeds. The setup mirrors the Champions League format, where teams play six qualifiers, with two games against each category of teams.

Each team will play home and away matches against six different opponents, creating a balanced and competitive environment. The best-ranked teams in League 1 will automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the remaining spots will be determined through play-offs. This approach aims to ensure that all teams have a fair chance to reach the tournament.

UEFA has not yet confirmed the exact number of automatic qualifying spots, but the system will be fine-tuned over the coming months before final approval in September. Despite the changes, minnows such as Andorra and San Marino will still have opportunities to reach major tournaments through the play-offs.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin highlighted the benefits of the new system, stating that it will improve competitive balance, reduce the number of dead matches, and offer a more appealing competition for fans. He also emphasized that the changes will ensure fair qualification chances for all teams without adding extra dates to the international calendar.

“The new formats will improve competitive balance, reduce the number of dead matches, offer a more appealing and dynamic competition to fans, while ensuring a fair qualification chance for all teams and without adding any additional dates in the international calendar,” Ceferin said.

The changes are expected to grow the value of UEFA men’s national team football, and the organization is looking forward to implementing the new competition systems.

Changes to the Nations League

In addition to the World Cup qualifiers, UEFA has also announced format changes to the Nations League, starting from the 2028-29 season. The competition will move from four leagues to three leagues of 18 teams each. Each league will be divided into three groups of six teams, who will play six matches against five different opponents.

The bottom League C will consist of seven teams, making it slightly different from the other leagues. However, the quarter-finals and final four of the competition will remain unchanged, along with promotion and relegation play-offs.

These changes are set to come into effect after Euro 2028, marking a significant shift in how UEFA organizes its international competitions. The goal is to maintain the integrity of the tournament while making it more engaging for fans and participants alike.
