Maybe Grogu and talking sheep can save us from reality | Opinion

A Moment of Escapism in a Troubled World

It’s been an incredibly long year, and as we approach the sweltering summer months, it feels like the world is on the brink of chaos. Gas prices are soaring, tensions with Iran are rising, and it seems like every day brings more bad news. In this climate, I have one simple request: I don’t want to hear any negative or critical comments about the new “Star Wars” movie, “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” This film, which I haven’t seen yet, is the only bright spot in an otherwise bleak landscape, and I refuse to let anyone ruin that for me.

For those who haven’t watched the television series “The Mandalorian,” which inspired the new movie, here’s a quick summary: There’s a cool character wearing an impressive helmet who protects an adorable creature that initially became known as Baby Yoda because of his resemblance to the iconic character from previous “Star Wars” films. Eventually, we learned that the creature’s name is Grogu, and he’s not just cute—he’s also curious, funny, and uses the Force, which is awesome.

After a few episodes of the show, most viewers found themselves adopting the same protective instincts as the helmeted character, who is often referred to as “The Mandalorian” or simply “Mando.” I’m not saying this makes sense, and I’m definitely not saying it’s normal for someone my age to have such a strong emotional connection to a fictional character. But I’m not embarrassed—I’m proud.

The Power of Grogu and Mando

More than ever, Americans need characters like Grogu and Mando. I’m tired of the world around us, and I’m tired of everything feeling so awful. The “The Mandalorian” series, which has a style reminiscent of classic spaghetti westerns from the mid-1960s, has brought a lot of joy and escapism. I will celebrate this new movie and enjoy its charm, no matter what critics or cinema experts say.

Mando is a character who doesn’t talk much, and I admire that. I wish more people would follow his example. We have far too many people—like our president and the talking heads on 24-hour news networks—who think that if they stop talking, the planet will stop spinning. Mando, on the other hand, lets Grogu be adorable, which is exactly what most of us are watching for. And when anyone threatens Grogu, he’s ready to fight, which I find incredibly satisfying.

There are also lasers, and lasers are really cool. When the world feels bleak and the news is terrible, watching people zip around shooting lasers at each other can be oddly comforting.

A New Source of Joy: “The Sheep Detectives”

Speaking of escapism, there’s another movie that has brought me a lot of joy: “The Sheep Detectives.” As with the movie about Grogu, there’s no logical reason why a grown-up like me would care about a live-action film featuring talking, CGI-enhanced sheep. But I spent money to see it, and I loved every minute of it. I would protect those sheep just as I would protect Grogu.

This movie offers a nearly two-hour escape from reality, immersing the audience in smart dialogue, surprisingly deep and tender discussions on heavy topics like death and inclusion, and a bunch of hilarious talking sheep. It’s one of those movies that leaves you stunned, wondering, “What just happened? How is a movie about verbal sheep solving a crime so good?”

The Need for Escapism

In times of war, rising costs, and general frustration, a little escapism can make a big difference. I believe we’re living in a moment of division, frustration, and stupidity, and our brains need breaks. Few breaks are better than ones that take us far away from reality and give us something wholesome to hold onto.

That’s where characters like Grogu and the sheep detectives come in. They won’t save us from reality, but they will give us a much-needed break. As Mando is my witness, I won’t let anyone take that from me.

A New Perspective on Life

My son recently graduated from college, and I couldn’t be prouder. It’s amazing to see how quickly time passes, and I feel like I did an incredible job raising him. While I may not have all the answers, I know I’ve given him the tools to succeed.
