Horner’s $165b Giant Unveils Surprising F1 Move

BYD’s Ambitious Pursuit of a Formula 1 Entry

Chinese automotive giant BYD, known for its tagline “Build Your Dreams,” has made its intentions clear: it is seriously considering entering Formula 1 as the sport’s 12th team. This bold move marks a significant shift from earlier reports that suggested the company was only interested in a minority stake in Alpine. Instead, BYD’s ambitions have grown, with executive vice-president Stella Li leading the charge.

Li, who has been instrumental in steering the company’s Formula 1 strategy, has now set her sights on a full-scale grid expansion. The discussions between BYD and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali during the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai have further fueled speculation about the company’s potential entry into the sport.

Speaking to Italian publication SportMediaset, Li expressed her admiration for Formula 1, highlighting its passion, culture, and the dream of being part of the sport. She also emphasized the opportunity to test BYD’s technology on a global stage.

A Strategic Move with High Stakes

The interest from BYD is not just a passing trend. Ousted team principal Christian Horner, known for his successful tenure at Red Bull Racing, has reportedly met with BYD executives at events such as the Cannes Film Festival. These meetings suggest a potential partnership, with both parties discussing the future of Formula 1 and the possibility of a new team.

Horner also visited the Monaco Formula E paddock, indicating his continued involvement in motorsport. His presence could be a valuable asset for any new team looking to establish itself in the competitive world of Formula 1.

BYD recently surpassed Tesla as the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer, with a valuation exceeding $168 billion AUD. The company is keen to leverage Formula 1 to enhance its global brand presence.

A New Era for Formula 1?

Sources indicate that BYD is not interested in a simple sponsorship or minority buy-in. Instead, the company is looking for 100% ownership of an existing team if it decides to enter the sport. This approach aligns with past statements from FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who expressed openness to a new entrant from an untapped market.

Sulayem emphasized that the decision to add a 12th team would depend on whether it adds value to the business of Formula 1. He stressed that the sport is not about filling the grid for the sake of it but about ensuring the longevity of the championship.

However, this cautious approach has been influenced by previous pushback against the Cadillac-Andretti bid. Despite this, Horner’s track record and connections with key figures like Domenicali and Sulayem make him a strong candidate to lead the effort for a 12th team.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite these developments, BYD faces some challenges. As an all-electric manufacturer, its interest in Formula 1 is closely tied to the sport’s commitment to advanced hybrid technology. Recent discussions about a potential return to V8 engines could complicate matters, forcing BYD to reassess its plans.

In terms of drivers, new entries like Cadillac have leaned on experienced veterans to help build their teams quickly. This makes Zhou Guanyu, the only mainland Chinese driver on the F1 circuit, a likely candidate for a potential BYD drive. Currently serving as a reserve driver for Cadillac, Zhou could play a crucial role in BYD’s Formula 1 aspirations.

As the rest of the 11 teams prepare for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, the prospect of a 12th team remains a topic of intense discussion. Whether BYD will take the plunge remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the company is determined to make its mark on the global motorsport stage.
