How is Rohit Sharma? MI Coach Reveals Update Ahead of AFG Series

Rohit Sharma’s Fitness and the Road to Recovery

The former Mumbai Indians skipper, Rohit Sharma, has been a focal point of attention due to his recent hamstring injury. The issue first surfaced during the IPL 2026 season when he suffered a setback in a match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium on April 12, 2026. The veteran opener had scored 19 runs from 13 deliveries before experiencing acute discomfort in his right hamstring. Team medical staff quickly attended to him on the field, but he was forced to retire hurt.

Following the incident, scans were conducted to assess the severity of the injury. Fortunately, the results ruled out any serious muscle tear, which provided some relief to both the player and the franchise. However, the Mumbai Indians opted for a cautious approach, keeping Rohit out of five consecutive league matches over a span of three weeks to avoid further complications.

Medical Clearance and Gradual Return

After being given time to recover, Rohit made his return to the field. However, his comeback was marked by a gradual approach, as the team sought to ensure that he was fully fit before reintegrating him into the playing XI. MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene addressed the media during a pre-match press conference, confirming that Rohit is now medically 100% fit.

Jayawardene explained that while Rohit is physically ready, he is still adapting to the demands of the game after his injury. He said:

“Yes, he had a hamstring injury. We gave him the time that he needed to recover from that and then he came back. The first game also, we were cautious even with his batting, the way he was running because he had to adapt to it slowly, gradually coming back into it. But for me, the medical team, everything is 100%.”

Performance Post-Injury

Despite the challenges, Rohit managed to make an impact upon his return. His workload was carefully monitored, and the team mostly deployed him as an Impact Player to limit his fielding duties. This strategy allowed him to focus on his batting without putting too much strain on his recovering hamstring.

In eight matches, Rohit amassed a total of 283 runs at a strike rate of 160.70. His performance was commendable, showcasing his ability to contribute effectively even after a period of absence. However, there have been concerns about his form, with some observers noting that he has not yet regained his peak level of performance.

Selection for India’s ODI Squad

Rohit’s inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the Afghanistan series has been a positive development. However, his participation remains conditional on receiving fitness clearance. The BCCI has been monitoring his recovery closely, ensuring that he is fully prepared for international cricket.

This cautious approach highlights the importance of prioritizing long-term health over short-term gains. While Rohit’s return to the field is a welcome sight for fans, the team’s decision to take things slowly reflects their commitment to his well-being.

Looking Ahead

As the Mumbai Indians prepare for their final match against the Rajasthan Royals, the focus will be on how Rohit performs in the upcoming game. His presence in the lineup could significantly impact the team’s chances of success. With his experience and leadership, he remains a crucial asset for the franchise.

The road to recovery has not been easy for Rohit, but his resilience and determination have been evident throughout the process. As he continues to build his fitness and regain his form, fans will be hoping to see the best version of him on the field.
