Jacob Bethell’s Injury and the Impact on RCB
Jacob Bethell, the young England batter, has been ruled out of the rest of IPL 2026 after sustaining a finger injury during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s match against Punjab Kings. The news was officially confirmed by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on their social media platforms.
Bethell injured his ring finger in the game and is set to return home for further medical evaluations. This injury also prevented him from playing in RCB’s last league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, marking a challenging season for the 22-year-old. His performance this season has been inconsistent, with only 96 runs scored in seven matches, which raised concerns about his batting rhythm.
Bethell had entered IPL 2026 with high expectations following his strong performance for England in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, he struggled to make a significant impact for Bengaluru this season. His injury and lack of form have made it a tough campaign for him within the tournament.
Phil Salt’s Return Offers a Bright Spot
Despite the setback with Bethell, RCB have received a much-needed boost as opener Phil Salt is set to return ahead of the playoffs. Salt has recovered from a previous finger injury that kept him sidelined earlier in the season. The team management had chosen not to risk his participation in the recent match against Hyderabad, as they wanted to ensure he was fully fit for the high-stakes playoff games.
Salt is now expected to take his place in the lineup for Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans. Although RCB lost their final league match to Hyderabad by 55 runs, they still finished at the top of the IPL 2026 points table. Led by captain Rajat Patidar, Bengaluru secured a crucial advantage of finishing first, which is vital when the knockout stages become more intense.
Even if RCB lose Qualifier 1, they won’t be completely eliminated from contention, as they will have a second route to the final by facing the winner of the Eliminator.
RCB’s Decision on Replacement Player
At this point, RCB have not officially announced whether they will bring in a replacement player for Bethell before the playoffs. The franchise might consider an established option like Jonny Bairstow or opt for a younger player as a long-term investment.
Adding a new player now could also help RCB plan for IPL 2027, as teams are allowed to retain players signed during the season. For now, Phil Salt is likely to return to the opening role, while Venkatesh Iyer remains a reliable batting option as RCB progresses into the knockout stage.
