Mumbai Indians Face Injury Setbacks Ahead of Final Match
The Mumbai Indians are dealing with a growing list of injuries as they prepare for their final match of the season. Two more key players have been ruled out, adding to the challenges faced by the five-time IPL champions.
Quinton de Kock, who started the season with an impressive 112 runs off 60 balls, and all-rounder Raj Bawa will miss the rest of the tournament due to injuries. The team announced their replacements ahead of the crucial clash against the Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium.
Before their usual ESA fixture, where MI brought in nearly 20,000 underprivileged children for the afternoon game at Wankhede, the IPL’s official website confirmed that both players will not be available for the team’s last match.
Mumbai Indians have signed Mahipal Lomror as a replacement for Quinton de Kock, while domestic wicketkeeper-batter Ruchit Ahir has come in for Raj Bawa in the squad.
De Kock was signed by MI for a base price of INR 1 crore, but Lomror has joined the franchise for INR 50 lakh. Similarly, Raj Bawa, who was picked for INR 30 lakh, has been replaced by Ruchit Ahir for the same amount.
Lomror, a 26-year-old cricketer, has played 40 IPL matches, scoring 527 runs at a strike rate of 141.28. He previously represented the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru between 2018 and 2024.
On the other hand, this marks the first IPL call-up for Saurashtra wicketkeeper Ruchit Ahir, who has made a name for himself through his performances in domestic cricket and the DY Patil T20 Tournament.
Earlier in the season, Quinton de Kock sustained a tendon injury in his left wrist before MI’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has since returned to South Africa for treatment and rehabilitation.
Raj Bawa suffered a ligament tear in his right thumb during Mumbai Indians’ match against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on May 14. It is also worth noting that he bowled the last over in MI’s nail-biting encounter against Royal Challengers Bengaluru earlier in the tournament.
Impact of Injuries on Team Strategy
Even though both players will be replaced for the remainder of the season, they remain eligible for retention going into IPL 2027. This decision allows the team to focus on their future plans without losing the potential of these players.
Mumbai Indians had a challenging IPL 2026 campaign, finishing as the second team to be knocked out after Lucknow Super Giants. At the time of the decision, MI was sitting in ninth place on the points table with eight wins from 13 games.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals are on 14 points and need a win in their last fixture to secure a spot in the playoffs. There is still some uncertainty about whether the new signings will actually make an appearance on Sunday. However, if MI manages a strong finish, it could potentially affect Rajasthan Royals’ chances of progressing further in the tournament.
Player Replacements and Future Prospects
Mahipal Lomror and Ruchit Ahir bring fresh energy and talent to the Mumbai Indians squad. Their inclusion is expected to provide much-needed depth and flexibility as the team aims to conclude the season on a positive note.
Lomror’s experience and consistent performance in previous seasons make him a valuable addition. His ability to adapt to different roles within the team could prove crucial in upcoming matches.
Similarly, Ruchit Ahir’s recent performances in domestic cricket have shown promise. His selection for the IPL highlights the potential he holds for the future.
With these changes, the Mumbai Indians are looking to regroup and focus on their remaining fixtures. The team will need to rely on its core strengths and strategic planning to navigate the challenges ahead.
As the season comes to an end, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these new additions perform and what impact they have on the team’s overall strategy.
