Nicolas Cage: Legal Name Change Completed His Identity

A New Identity for Nicolas Cage

In a recent interview, Nicolas Cage revealed that he has officially changed his legal name to Nick Cage. This marks the culmination of a long-standing decision that has seen him use the name professionally for decades. The actor made this announcement while promoting his latest project, “Spider-Noir,” a Prime Video series available on MGM+, where he plays Ben Reilly, a private investigator set in Depression-era New York City.

“I am Nick Cage. I changed my name legally last year. I’m Nick Cage in life, and I’m Nick Cage on camera,” Cage stated during the interview.

The decision to adopt the surname “Cage” was not just a professional choice but also a personal one. Cage has often spoken about how he wanted to distinguish his career from the Coppola family name. Over time, “Cage” became an integral part of his identity both on and off screen.

The Inspiration Behind the Name

Cage shared that the name was inspired by two sources: Marvel’s Luke Cage and composer John Cage. He explained that the name carried artistic significance in the environment where he grew up. Additionally, he emphasized that he wanted something short and memorable while keeping his first name, Nicolas, as it was the name given to him by his father.

The legal change coincides with Cage’s return to comic-book storytelling through “Spider-Noir.” This project represents a significant shift in his career, allowing him to explore new creative avenues.

A History of Comic Book Roles

Cage’s history with superhero projects has been marked by several notable detours. He was originally cast in Tim Burton’s “Superman Lives,” which was ultimately abandoned before filming. He also had the opportunity to play the Green Goblin in the first “Spider-Man” movie, but he opted for a different role in “Adaptation” instead.

“I’ve made decisions that were right for me, and I’m happy with those results,” Cage said.

While these missed opportunities make “Spider-Noir” more significant, Cage clarified that he was not chasing a belated superhero moment. Instead, he was drawn to the chance to blend old noir acting styles, comic-book imagery, and a unique character study.

Influences and Performance Style

Cage approached “Spider-Noir” not just as a superhero story but as an opportunity to channel the styles of older film actors such as Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, and Edward G. Robinson. He aimed to embody the essence of their performances.

Additionally, he designed his performance to fit the show’s black-and-white format, drawing inspiration from German expressionism and spider-like physical movements.

The Appeal of Television

Cage once resisted television due to concerns about its standardized nature. However, this perspective changed during the pandemic when his son introduced him to “Breaking Bad.” The series showed him how much time actors could have to develop their characters.

“I began to see that the actors in that show were afforded the luxury of time to tell their story,” Cage noted.

For “Spider-Noir,” he appreciated the eight-episode structure, which allowed him to build Ben Reilly gradually, something that might not be possible in a film.

Acting Philosophy and Future Projects

Cage also discussed his acting philosophy with Variety, mentioning the term “nouveau shamanic.” He described imagination as central to acting and mentioned that he no longer relies on the extreme preparation methods associated with some of his earlier work.

“I’ve been doing this for 45 years, so I don’t have to do that anymore,” he said.

Regarding future projects, Cage mentioned that reports about “True Detective” remain unsettled. He expressed interest in working with Issa López but noted that nothing is concrete. He also shared that he occasionally exchanges emails with Quentin Tarantino, though a collaboration has yet to materialize.

“He’s a friend of sorts, and I admire his filmmaking style. He’s an acrobat with filmmaking,” Cage added.
